'Since joining in with Matts weekly lessons my playing has improved so much. I feel like I have joined a ukulele family. Matt is patient, talented, funny and always has time for his students.' - Julie Anne Williams

One of the things that differentiates me from from the ukulele teaching crowd is that I teach you how to spice up your songs and “make them yours”.  Lessons are not dumbed down to the point that you're forever stuck parroting someone else’s versions of songs.

'It's amazing how Matt can simplify complex techniques into achievable steps. I also love how he makes music theory understandable at the moments that it applies. No boring theory in his lessons. Matt's choices of songs is soooo cool too.' - Rebecca Myers

Tonight peeps!

Join me live for Kanikapila on Monday 20 July at 6pm UK time as we celebrate the theme of “You and Me” with:

u + me = <3 by Olivia RodrigoYou and Me Song by The Wannadies

I’ll teach you how to play both songs on the ukulele, including the chords, rhythms and little musical details that give each one its character.

We’ll also take a closer look at the wonderfully clever harmony in You and Me Song. The Wannadies use colourful extended chords to give the verses a dreamy, jazzy quality before suddenly opening everything out into one of the most perfect pop choruses ever written.
It’s a fantastic example of how changing the types of chords you use can completely transform the mood of a song.

Bring your ukulele, say hello in the live chat and come and play along. All levels are very welcome.

TONIGHT peeps! Would love you to come and join us. It's all FREE!

Two songs. One title. Two completely different stories.

Join me live on Monday 13th July at 6pm UK for another relaxed Kanikapila Monday, where we'll be exploring two beautiful songs called Songbird.

First we’ll learn Oasis's Songbird, Liam Gallagher's second songwriting credit for the band. Simple, heartfelt and beautifully understated, it became one of Oasis's most personal recordings.

Then we'll play the timeless Fleetwood Mac classic written by Christine McVie during the recording of Rumours.

As always, we'll chat about the stories behind the songs, explore a few musical ideas together, and spend an hour making music with friends from around the world.

Everyone is welcome, whether you've been playing for six weeks or six decades.

Because kanikapila simply means 'play music together.'

Learn Ukulele Club Night – Wednesday 5th August (Members Only)

It's time for another Learn Ukulele Club Night, and I'd love you to join us!
One of my favourite things about this community is that we're all learning together. Whether you've been playing for a few months or many years, Club Night is a chance to relax, make music together and pick up ideas that will make your playing more enjoyable. And of course there will be much silly mayhem such as Matt's Second Favourite Thing On The Internet This Month and Matt's Cats That Don't Actually Belong To Matt!

This Month's Workshop: Intros, Endings & Turnarounds

Have you ever noticed how experienced players seem to know exactly how to begin a song, finish confidently, or keep the music flowing between verses?
This month we'll explore some of the most useful chord progressions in music and learn how they can instantly make your playing sound more polished and musical.

Together we'll look at:
Creating simple but effective introductions
Classic turnarounds used in hundreds of songs
Circle of Fifths progressions
Easy jazz-inspired diminished chord movements
Extending ii–V progressions
Confident endings that avoid the dreaded "everyone stops at a different time!"

As always, you'll receive downloadable worksheets to keep and refer back to whenever you're learning new songs.

What Happens During Club Night?
7:00pm – Welcome & Catch Up
A chance to say hello and catch up with friends from around the world.
7:10pm – The (Not Quite) Open Mic
Watch performances submitted by fellow members and celebrate everyone's progress in our wonderfully supportive community.
7:30pm – Monthly Workshop
This month's lesson:Intros, Endings & Turnarounds
8:15pm – Ask Matt & Let's Help!
Members can send in short videos showing something they'd like help with, from tricky chord changes to fingerpicking, songs, techniques or choosing a new ukulele. We'll work through them together.
8:30pm – Community Pub Discussion
General ukulele chat, ideas, questions and a chance to help shape future Club Nights.

Welcome to the First Ever Learn Ukulele Club Night!

I'm incredibly excited to announce something brand new for Learn Ukulele with Matt members...
The Learn Ukulele Club!

Starting on Wednesday 1st July at 8pm (UK time), we're launching a brand new monthly members-only event designed to feel less like an online lesson and more like a friendly ukulele club meeting.

Over the years I've always believed that learning music is about more than chords, strumming patterns and technique. It's about people. The Learn Ukulele Club is a chance for us to learn together, share our progress, encourage one another and become part of a supportive musical community.

What Happens at Club Night?

7:00pm – Welcome & Catch UpA chance to say hello and connect with fellow members.

7:10pm – The (Not Quite) Open Mic!Members can submit videos of themselves performing a song, tune or arrangement. Record it at home, do as many takes as you like, then share it with the Club. We'll watch a selection together and cheer each other on in the comments.

7:30pm – Monthly WorkshopThis month's topic is:
Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen – How to Work Out Songs by Ear
We'll explore:
• How to recognise keys• Chord personalities and harmonic function• Hearing chord movement• Recognising time signatures• Using the Colour System to make sense of what you're hearing

Members will also receive downloadable worksheets to help develop these skills.

8:15pm – Ask Matt & Let's Help!
Members can submit short videos showing a challenge they're facing, whether it's a tricky chord change, fingerpicking pattern, song section or even advice on buying a new ukulele.
We'll watch the clips together and work through solutions as a community.

8:30pm – Community Pub DiscussionIdeas, feedback, questions and general ukulele chat.

Members Shape The Club
One of the things I'm most excited about is that members will help decide what we learn next.
There will be a poll on our Facebook group to choose the topic for August's workshop, and during the Club Night itself members will be able to suggest ideas for future workshops too.

Included With Membership
The Learn Ukulele Club is included with all Learn Ukulele with Matt memberships.
As a member you'll also get:
• Access to all 10 structured ukulele courses• Hundreds of lessons, songs and arrangements• Monthly Learn Ukulele Club Nights• Downloadable worksheets and resources• The members forum and community• Exclusive workshops and replays• The Learn Ukulele with Matt app

If you're not yet a member, I've put a link in the comments where you can find out more and join us. I'll also explain exactly how to submit videos for both the (Not Quite) Open Mic and Ask Matt & Let's Help sections.

Thank you all for helping make Learn Ukulele with Matt such a warm, encouraging and supportive place to learn music. This feels like the natural next step.

Music is better when we play together.

Much love,
Matt

Something very special is coming...

For years, I've dreamed of creating an event that brings together everything I love about music, teaching, community and the ukulele.

Today, I'm incredibly excited to announce:

Aloha Britain

The Hawaii–Britain Ukulele Gathering 2027

A unique weekend celebrating Hawaiian music, culture and ukulele in the heart of the Cotswolds.

Joining us will be four world-class artists and educators:
• Craig Chee • Sarah Maisel
• Jeff Peterson • Cory Mau

and myself for a weekend of workshops, performances, shared music and community.

Set in the beautiful Cotswold surroundings of Tewkesbury Park Hotel, with luxury accommodation, stunning views of the Malvern Hills, pool and gym facilities, Aloha Britain is designed to be much more than a traditional ukulele festival or retreat. It's an opportunity to learn from some of Hawaii's finest musicians (their only UK appearance this year), explore the cultural roots of the instrument we all love, make new friends and spend a weekend immersed in music.

Learn more and book your place here: www.ukulelefestivalofgreatbritain.com/aloha-britai…

Whether you're a beginner, an experienced player, or simply someone who loves the spirit of ukulele, we'd love to welcome you.

After the event we also have a very fun and free Learn Ukulele with Matt meet up. It’s going to be a blast!

I can’t wait. This is the event I've always wanted to create. I hope you'll join us!

Places are limited and first come first served. I’m telling you guys first before promoting this further.

Special Member Benefit

As a thank you to the LearnUkulele.com community that has helped make events like this possible, all current Learn Ukulele members receive 10% off Aloha Britain bookings.
