Dermal fillers (hyaluronic acid) are gel implants placed in precise planes to restore volume, support facial structure, and soften lines. Done properly, they should look natural — not “puffy”. Treatment planning is always anatomy-led and often staged.

Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor

Hello, my name is Sharon Leayr, I am the Practice Manager and Skin Laser Therapist at Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor, and I’ve been treating skin with medical grade lasers for around 8 to 9 years.

A little personal moment from my recent trip to Thailand; this is me with my nephew, Johnny (Bart and Airada’s little boy). I got to spend time with Airada and the twins, Johnny and Trudy, and it honestly meant a lot.

Laser always starts with a consult (about 30 minutes). We do not rush into laser on the same day for first timers. In your consult we go through:
• your goals and expectations
• full medical history and medications (including anything that can make you photosensitive)
• skin type (Fitzpatrick), recent sun exposure, tanning or fake tan, and past reactions
• what results are realistic, how many sessions you may need, downtime, aftercare, and the key risks

Laser treatments we perform

1) Fractional Resurfacing (Fotona)
Great for skin texture, acne scarring, fine lines, pores, and overall rejuvenation (your plan depends on your skin and goals).

3) Vascular Redness and Broken Capillaries
Targets visible facial vessels, redness and rosacea type vascular damage, customised to your skin.

How to choose a safe laser clinic (quick checklist)
• A real consult first, not rushed same day laser
• Clear explanation of benefits, risks, downtime and aftercare
• Proper eye protection and hygiene standards
• Settings documented, and a plan tailored to your skin type
• A clinic that says no when laser isn’t right

Laser Tattoo Removal with the Fotona StarWalker (FracTAT™) | Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor

1) How the StarWalker works (and why colours matter)
StarWalker uses ultra-short, high-energy laser pulses that are absorbed by tattoo pigment. The ink particles heat and shatter into smaller fragments, then your body clears them over time. We use StarWalker’s 4 handpieces / colour options to better match different ink colours and depths (black/grey is usually easiest; some lighter colours, blues and purples can be more stubborn).

Treatment page:
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/treatment/tattoo-re…
Tattoo removal safety policy:
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/laser-ener…

2) What affects results (sessions, comfort, expectations)
Most tattoos need multiple sessions (often 6+, sometimes more). Results depend on professional vs amateur ink, colour mix, depth, location, scar tissue, skin type and overall health. Sessions are usually spaced weeks apart to let your skin recover and your immune system clear ink fragments. Cooling is used, and as a doctor-led clinic we can also discuss prescription-grade numbing options when appropriate.

On the day, it’s normal to see brief “frosting” (whitening) of the tattoo, followed by redness and swelling.

StarWalker protocol:
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/laser-ener…

Laser room safety SOP:
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/laser-ener…

3) Aftercare (protect the result)
Expect redness, heat and swelling, sometimes light scabbing/blistering. Key rules:
cool packs early (first 24–48 hrs)
keep it clean, don’t pick
avoid heat (saunas/spas/hot showers), heavy exercise and friction for 48 hrs
avoid tanning/sun on the area while healing
aloe vera gel can be soothing in the first few days; once fully healed, keep skin moisturised

If pain, swelling or weeping is worsening instead of settling, contact us for review.
Aftercare + escalation:
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/laser-ener…

4) Choosing a safe cosmetic injectables clinic (anti-wrinkle + dermal fillers)
Ask: Who is injecting? Do they explain risks/aftercare clearly? Is there a proper follow-up plan? Do they avoid pressure selling?
Guide:
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/governance…

5) Choosing a safe laser clinic
Ask: What exact device is it? Do they assess skin type/meds/sun exposure first? Is there a documented adverse-event plan and follow-up?
Guide:
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/governance…

6) Dr Bart Scanlon (doctor-led care)

Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor

If you’re considering anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, or laser skin treatments, don’t choose a clinic on price or trends. Choose the clinic that can prove safety, training, and systems.

10-point safety checklist (applies to BOTH injectables + lasers):
1) Proper consultation first (no rushed “same-day pressure”).
2) Informed consent + written aftercare (risks, alternatives, downtime, warning signs).
3) Who is treating you (qualifications/scope) and who is accountable if there’s a complication.
4) A tailored plan (conservative, staged when needed).
5) Product/device governance: injectables traceability (batch/expiry/cold chain) + laser servicing/calibration logs.
6) Infection control: clean setup, correct skin prep, PPE and eye protection.
7) Emergency readiness: a real plan for allergic reactions, vascular complications, burns, escalation.
8) Follow-up built in (and clear after-hours contact pathway).
9) Documentation + privacy: proper records; marketing photos only with specific consent.
10) Quality assurance: ongoing CPD, audits, incident/near-miss learning and improvements.

Why policies + CPD matter:
Anyone can say “we’re safe.” A serious clinic can show you the written protocols (consent, training, infection control, device safety, complication response), how staff are credentialed, and how incidents are reviewed so the system keeps improving. That’s what turns “good intentions” into consistent outcomes.

Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to my patients, colleagues, and everyone who follows along.

I’m a bit late posting this because I only just returned to Australia, but I wanted to share something that matters to me more than any procedure, trend, or “business update”: family.

Over the holidays I had a beautiful seafood lunch with my wife, Airada, with grandparents, aunties, and uncles around the table — the kind of noisy, warm chaos that reminds you what you’re actually working for. Then over New Year it was the simple, grounding stuff that felt the biggest: taking Johnny and Trudy swimming, reading books with them, building blocks on the floor, and just being present.

They’re 16 months old now, and watching their personalities develop week by week is unreal. Most of my patients know my rhythm: I work hard in Australia for 11–12 days straight, then I’m back with my family for around 9 days. Living between those two worlds has made me more grateful — for my family, and for the people who trust me with their face and their confidence. Being a husband and a dad is genuinely my proudest achievement, and I’m trying to improve at it every day.

That mindset flows directly into how I practise medicine. Good intentions matter. Clear communication matters. I don’t believe in upselling, pushing products, or recommending treatments that aren’t right for someone. Sometimes the best clinical decision is to say, “You don’t need anything today,” or “Let’s wait,” or “There’s a safer option.” Even if it costs me in the short term, it’s the right call — because long-term trust is everything.

I’m also proud of the team around me. A calm, respectful clinic experience doesn’t happen by accident — it’s built by good people, good systems, and consistent standards. That’s why we’ve put our policies and governance in the public domain: transparency, safety, and accountability should be easy for patients to see (not hidden behind marketing).

Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor

Cheek dermal filler (midface/cheekbone filler) uses hyaluronic acid (HA) gel to restore support and contour through the midface. Done well, it’s about structure, balance, and natural lift — not “big cheeks.” At Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor, our team (including Jolan and Filip) follows the same conservative planning, documentation, and safety-first protocols for every HA filler treatment. Dr Bart Scanlon has performed over 70,000 cosmetic treatments across 10 years, and we’re a doctor-led clinic. Sharon Lear has over 8 years’ experience with Fotona Dynamis and StarWalker lasers, which are excellent platforms used to treat a wide range of skin concerns (where laser is the better option than filler, we’ll tell you).
Cheek filler page: newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/treatment/cheek-fil…

Dermal filler overview page: newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/treatment/dermal-fi…

What is dermal filler, and what filler is best for cheeks?
For cheeks, HA filler is commonly preferred because it’s predictable, adjustable, and reversible. “Best” depends on your anatomy and the plan (firmer gel for deep structural support vs softer gel for blending). Product and batch traceability should be recorded every time.

Policy: newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/cosmetic-i…

Techniques: what are the options, and why are they good/bad?
Cheek filler can be performed with needle or cannula. Needle can be highly precise in selected planes; cannula may reduce bruising and may reduce (not eliminate) vascular risk. Safety comes from anatomy mapping, correct depth, low pressure, and micro-amounts — not the tool alone.
Policy: newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/cosmetic-i…

How long does it last, and what should you expect?
Cheek HA filler commonly lasts around 6–18 months (often longer in the midface than lips), but it varies with product, depth, movement, and metabolism. Expect refinement and lift, not a different face.

Policy: newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/governance…
Settling and integration (day 0 to week 4)
Early swelling/tenderness is normal; bruising (if it happens) usually settles over 7–14 days. Most people judge the result more accurately at 2–4 weeks once hydration and tissue integration stabilise.

Policy: newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/governance…
Common issues (and what they look like)
Puffiness (including malar oedema in prone patients), bruising, tenderness, lumpiness/firmness, unevenness/asymmetry, and contour irregularities can occur. Tyndall effect (bluish hue) is typically from product being too superficial (less common in cheeks than thin-skin areas, but possible).

Policy: newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/cosmetic-i…

Policy: newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/cosmetic-i…
Fact sheet: newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/injectable…

How we correct these problems
Correction depends on the cause: time and conservative care for early swelling/bruising, practitioner-guided massage when appropriate, small adjustments if needed, or dissolving part/all of HA filler with prescription hyaluronidase for persistent lumpiness, overcorrection, or unwanted contour.

Policy: newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/cosmetic-i…
Treatment page: newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/treatment/dissolvin…

Emergencies (rare): infection, vascular occlusion, anaphylaxis
A safe clinic must be ready. Infection needs urgent assessment and treatment. Vascular occlusion is time-critical (severe pain, blanching, livedo/cool skin, or any vision symptoms) and requires immediate action and escalation. Severe allergy/anaphylaxis requires emergency response and ambulance transfer.

Policy: newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/clinical-p…

Policy: newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/clinical-p…

Follow-up and aftercare (including our free follow-up model)
You should receive written aftercare, red-flag symptoms, and a review plan (often at 10–14 days, and again around 4 weeks if needed). Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor offers free follow-up appointments for treatments performed in-clinic; additional product (if required) may incur a cost.

Policy: newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/cosmetic-i…

Policy: newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/clinical-p…
Reversibility (can cheek filler be reversed?)
If HA filler is used, yes — it can be reduced or dissolved with hyaluronidase when clinically appropriate.

Cheek dermal filler (midface/cheekbone filler) uses hyaluronic acid (HA) gel to restore support and contour in the midface. The goal is natural lift and balance — done conservatively, in the right plane.
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/treatment/cheek-fil…

What filler is used, and what’s “best”?
Cheek filler is usually HA because it’s predictable and reversible. The best HA depends on your anatomy (firmer gels for structure deeper; softer gels for blending). Product is documented with batch traceability.
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/cosmetic-i…
Techniques (pros/cons)

Needle can be very precise; cannula can reduce bruising and may reduce (not eliminate) vascular risk. Safety comes from anatomy mapping, correct depth, low pressure, and micro-amounts — not overfilling.
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/cosmetic-i…

How long does it last?
Most HA cheek filler commonly lasts about 6–18 months. Longevity varies with product, depth, movement, and metabolism.
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/injectable…
Settling and integration (0–4 weeks)
Swelling/tenderness early is normal. By ~2 weeks it’s integrating; the most reliable final look is often closer to 4 weeks.
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/treatment/dermal-fi…

Common issues
Bruising, tenderness, mild asymmetry, lumpiness/uneven contour can occur. Some patients get cheek puffiness (delayed hydration swelling / malar oedema).
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/cosmetic-i…

How we correct problems
Options include review + photos, guided massage, conservative adjustment, or dissolving some/all HA filler with hyaluronidase (for persistent lumpiness, overcorrection, or unwanted contour).
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/cosmetic-i…
Emergencies (rare)

Infection needs urgent assessment. Vascular occlusion is time-critical (severe pain, blanching, livedo, cool skin, or any vision symptoms) and requires immediate action and escalation.
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/clinical-p…

Aftercare, follow-up, reversibility
Written aftercare and red-flags matter. We provide ongoing follow-up support for as long as Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor is operating (free review appointments; extra product may incur a cost if needed). HA filler is reversible when clinically appropriate.

Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor

Tear trough dermal filler (under-eye filler) is a small-volume treatment designed to soften true hollows and reduce shadowing under the eyes. For this area, the safest option is typically a hyaluronic acid (HA) filler chosen for the under-eye region (lower swelling risk, softer gel, and predictable reversibility). Not everyone is suitable (fluid retention, very thin skin, and significant “bags” can make filler a poor choice).

newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/treatment/tear-trou…
Technique matters more here than almost anywhere else. Common approaches are needle or cannula, with careful plane selection and tiny micro-amounts. Cannula can reduce bruising and may reduce the odds of vascular events, but it’s not “risk-free.” Needle can be more precise in selected planes, but bruising risk is higher and technique must be meticulous.

newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/cosmetic-i…
How long does it last? Results vary by product choice, depth, your anatomy, and metabolism. A realistic range for HA fillers is often around 6–18 months, with the under-eye area commonly sitting toward the longer end when done conservatively and in the right plane.

newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/governance…
The “settling” phase is real. Day 1–7 can involve swelling and bruising; weeks 2–4 is when the filler integrates and the finish becomes more representative of the final outcome. That’s why under-eye filler should be reviewed, not judged immediately.
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/governance…

Common issues include puffiness (oedema), Tyndall effect (bluish/grey tint from product being too superficial), bruising, lumpiness, and unevenness/asymmetry. Many “problems” are temporary in the first 1–2 weeks, but some require active correction.
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/cosmetic-i…

How we correct problems depends on the cause: time and simple measures for early swelling/bruising, targeted adjustment for unevenness, and hyaluronidase (filler dissolver) when product needs reducing/removing (including Tyndall or persistent lump/overfill).
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/cosmetic-i…

Emergencies are rare, but clinics must be ready. Infection needs early recognition and prompt treatment. Vascular occlusion is a time-critical emergency (pain, blanching, livedo, cool skin, or any vision symptoms) and requires immediate action and escalation.
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/clinical-p…
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/clinical-p…

Aftercare and follow-up matter as much as technique. You should receive written aftercare, clear red-flag instructions, and a proper review plan. At Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor, we provide free follow-up for as long as the clinic is operating — ongoing care, not “inject and disappear.”
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/clinical-p…

Is it reversible? If HA filler is used, yes — it can be reduced or dissolved with prescription hyaluronidase when clinically appropriate. This is one reason HA is preferred for higher-risk areas like the tear trough.

Dermal Fillers (Hyaluronic Acid) — what they are & how they work
Hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal filler is a clear, gel-like substance placed under the skin to restore or refine facial shape.

HA naturally exists in the body and attracts water, which is why the right product in the right plane can improve contour, soften deeper “static” lines, and support facial balance. Results are designed to look natural (not “puffy”), and treatment planning matters just as much as the injection itself.

Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor — Dermal Filler Treatment page:
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/treatment/dermal-fi…
Dermal filler in men vs women (same product category, different planning)
Men and women often need different strategies because the aesthetic goals (and underlying anatomy) can differ. Male plans may focus on structural definition (chin/jaw/cheek support) and keeping the face looking “sharp” and proportionate. Female plans often prioritise softer transitions, lifting support, and balanced contour. The goal is always the same: your face, just fresher — using conservative volumes and staged plans.

Men’s Filler Technique SOP:
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/cosmetic-i…

Women’s Filler Technique SOP:
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/cosmetic-i…

Golden Ratio & facial planning (why it matters)
Good dermal filler isn’t about copying a “template face”. It’s about harmony. Golden Ratio concepts (φ) are used as a guide for facial thirds/fifths, balance, and proportional relationships — then adapted to your sex, ethnicity, age, and personal goals. We use these frameworks to plan subtle, defensible changes that still look like you.

Golden Ratio & Facial Harmony SOP:
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/cosmetic-i…

Dermal filler aftercare (simple steps that protect your result)
Most people have minimal downtime, but aftercare affects swelling, bruising, and how smoothly the filler settles. In general:
• Avoid heavy exercise, saunas/steam rooms, and excess alcohol for 24–48 hours
• Don’t massage or “check” the area repeatedly unless specifically instructed
• Use cool compresses for swelling/bruising (not aggressive pressure)
• Keep makeup and skincare gentle for the first 24 hours
• Contact the clinic early if something feels wrong — don’t “wait it out”

Dermal Fillers (Hyaluronic Acid) Policy & Procedure (includes aftercare + red flags):
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/cosmetic-i…
Complications & how they’re treated (we plan for the rare stuff)
Most filler side effects are mild (swelling, bruising), but serious complications can occur — and the only safe approach is to have protocols, stock, and training ready.
Vascular occlusion (blood vessel compromise): needs immediate recognition and urgent management.

Vascular Occlusion Safety Protocol:
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/clinical-p…
Anaphylaxis / severe allergic reaction: rare, but treated as a medical emergency with a clear escalation pathway.

Anaphylaxis & Allergic Reaction Safety Protocol:
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/clinical-p…
Granulomas / delayed nodules / migration: assessed properly, treated according to cause, and escalated when needed.

Why continuity of care matters at Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor
Dr Bart Scanlon has performed 70,000+ cosmetic treatments over 10 years. At Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor, cosmetic injectables are doctor-only: no nurses injecting, and no rotating door of new injectors. That continuity means your history, your photos, your response patterns, and your long-term plan stay with one doctor — which is a big part of reducing avoidable complications and improving patient satisfaction over years (not just one appointment).

Cosmetic Injectables in Newcastle: Anti-Wrinkle & Dermal Fillers at Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor

When you’re choosing cosmetic injectables, the biggest drivers of safer outcomes are experience, consistency, and a clinic culture that puts patients ahead of sales. Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor is led by Dr Bart Scanlon, who has performed 70,000+ cosmetic treatments over 10+ years and is the only injector in clinic. That doctor-only model means continuity of care — one clinician who knows your face, your treatment history, and what looks natural on you.

What we do (and how we approach it)
Anti-wrinkle injections are used to soften dynamic lines (like frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet) while keeping natural expression. Results typically build over 10–14 days and are tailored to your anatomy.

Dermal fillers (hyaluronic acid) are used to restore support and facial balance — not to “overfill.” In consult we talk through benefits, realistic outcomes, aftercare, and risks (including rare complications).

Our core values (this is where safety starts)
We don’t upsell. We start slow. We prefer staged plans over big “one-and-done” sessions. If something isn’t needed, we’ll tell you. That conservative approach is how you get natural results and lower risk.

Laser expertise in the same clinic
Sharon Leayr is our practice manager and skin laser therapist, with 8+ years of daily hands-on experience using gold-standard Fotona Dynamis and Fotona StarWalker systems. These platforms are respected for precision and versatility across pigment, redness, texture, scarring and rejuvenation — but only when the operator matches settings to the right diagnosis and skin type.

Checklist: how to find a safe cosmetic injectables clinic
Use this as your consult checklist:
• Who is assessing you, prescribing, and injecting — and are those roles clear in your consent/records?
• Do they explain risks, alternatives, aftercare, and how follow-up works?
• Do they have a real complication plan (not just “you’ll be fine”)?
• Do you feel pressured, rushed, or sold to? If yes: walk.

Checklist: how to find a safe laser clinic
• Proper assessment first (skin type risk, pigment risk, meds, sun exposure, contraindications).
• Eye protection, infection control, and maintained devices.
• Clear downtime/aftercare and an escalation pathway if something goes wrong.

Complications: what a responsible clinic plans for
Most people only get temporary redness, swelling or bruising — but a safe clinic is judged by how it plans for rare events. If you want to read our complication frameworks:

• Dermal filler complication management policy (NSW): newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/cosmetic-i…

Men vs women: why dosing and goals can differ
Men often need broader coverage and higher unit totals due to greater muscle mass, and aesthetic goals can be different (for example, a straighter brow). This is why “copy/paste dosing” is a red flag.
