Hey all! Quick channel update for the rest of December -

Videos will be reduced to between 1-2 a week, rather than the standard 4-5, and will be more so Cool Mechanic videos, as well as a few special videos planned that are a bit different from what I usually do to recap the first year of GDL. This is due to me taking a break from the computer from the 19th of December until the 5th of January.

Shorts will still be mostly 2 a day (the play is for there to be always 2 a day, but I might miss a couple), so if you mainly watch shorts then you shouldn't notice too much of a difference.

There is a chance that episode 3 of the GDL podcast wont come out on the 29th, just due to scheduling conflicts and me being away, but if not then it will come out on the 12th of January.

Thanks again for such an amazing year of GDL, next year is going to be even better I reckon!

No video today as I've finally sat down to finish off a video I have been making on and off for a few months now. Breaking down the design and evolution of the level design of every first level in every 2D Mario game! All being good, it should be uploaded tomorrow at 5pm GMT :)

Of course, there will still be two shorts uploaded as usual.

The first episode of the GDL Podcast is out now! Listen to hear a really interesting and insightful conversation with the Game Directior of Kaizen Game Works (Paradise Killer, Promise Mascot Agency).

It was great to sit down and chat to Oli about how the studio started from just his and his co-founder's savings, to funded by a publisher, to now one of the most exciting and interesting Indie Devs in the UK!

If you would like to see more episodes of the pod please consider leaving a like to help get it out there so more people know about it!

Thank you :)

Hey all! This post is interesting for two reasons! First, a change to the upload schedule, and second, something really cool!

1. No longer going to be uploading a cool mechanic comp on the weekend. There will still be two shorts going up every day, just no long-form videos.

2. From now on, every two weeks on Mondays, there will be an episode of the brand new Game Design Library Podcast, where I spend an hour or so interviewing a developer and hearing their story. First episode is going up this coming Monday! Whoop Whoop. Thank you to Oli from Kaizen Game Works for taking the time to talk to me.
For now, it will just be available on YouTube, but I am looking at how to get it on most, if not all, podcast streaming platforms too!

Hey all! Thinking about switching up my thumbnails for the "Cool Mechanic" series, can you let me know which one you prefer, option 1 is the old and option 2 is the new one!

Whichever one is chosen will be the one for the (reupload) of 5 Cool Mechanics in Puzzle Games tomorrow - the reupload isn't due to the thumbnail, had to take it down to make an edit I couldn't do in YouTube studio.

Thanks for your thoughts and votes ahead of time! Greatly appreciated :)

If you've heard of Clair Obscur Expedition 33, but not sure why people love it so much, this video should help!

Seems like the latest entry to the game design library didn't get sent out to as many people as usual, including subscribers. So I thought I'll make a post about it!

#silksong follow up video is still on track for tomorrow! I am working hard on addressing the main crit from the last video, which was attacks were not detailed enough in the spreadsheet.

Here is a screenshot below to see how I am breaking them down. If you have any feedback please let me know!

Top numbers are frames. "Start up" is the amount of frames from when the boss starts a specific type of attack, until when they actually start hitting the attack. "Hit (Likely)" is how many frames until the player is likely to be hit, from the initial start up. Then the "Difference" is just the difference between those two numbers, which means how many frames from the end of the start up until you are likely to be hit. This number is important as it tells how fast the player needs to react if they did not spot the start up animation, which can be more or less obvious depending on the boss or the attack.

Then we have type of attack, split into melee, projectile or AOE.

Then we have target type, which is essentially whether the boss is targeting an area or the player, and if they are targeting the player, when are they doing it. Some bosses target the point where the player was at the beginning of their start up animation, some do it at the end, and some home to the player. All important distinctions!

Anyway, hopefully you are looking forward to the video and once again thank you for your feedback on the last one!

Whilst I'm working on the final Silksong video, I finally finished off my video on and Roger. A very different game, but definitely one worth checking out if you are interesting in game design!
