Seems like the latest entry to the game design library didn't get sent out to as many people as usual, including subscribers. So I thought I'll make a post about it!
#silksong follow up video is still on track for tomorrow! I am working hard on addressing the main crit from the last video, which was attacks were not detailed enough in the spreadsheet.
Here is a screenshot below to see how I am breaking them down. If you have any feedback please let me know!
Top numbers are frames. "Start up" is the amount of frames from when the boss starts a specific type of attack, until when they actually start hitting the attack. "Hit (Likely)" is how many frames until the player is likely to be hit, from the initial start up. Then the "Difference" is just the difference between those two numbers, which means how many frames from the end of the start up until you are likely to be hit. This number is important as it tells how fast the player needs to react if they did not spot the start up animation, which can be more or less obvious depending on the boss or the attack.
Then we have type of attack, split into melee, projectile or AOE.
Then we have target type, which is essentially whether the boss is targeting an area or the player, and if they are targeting the player, when are they doing it. Some bosses target the point where the player was at the beginning of their start up animation, some do it at the end, and some home to the player. All important distinctions!
Anyway, hopefully you are looking forward to the video and once again thank you for your feedback on the last one!
Whilst I'm working on the final Silksong video, I finally finished off my video on and Roger. A very different game, but definitely one worth checking out if you are interesting in game design!
I received a LOT of feedback from my first ever Design Deep Dive, on Silksong. Would people be interested in a follow up where I expand significantly on the balancing metrics based on the feedback?
The video I have been working on for about 2 weeks is finally here! Is #Silksong isn't Actually Harder than #Hollow Knight? - In this game design deep dive I use a bunch of different techniques used in the games industry to test out this theory. Hopefully you enjoy... I'm glad it's done :)
Still working hard on my Design Deep Dive into the actual difficulty of #Silksong, and how it compares to #Hollow Knight - focusing purely on the numbers of it all.
Can anyone guess where these encounters are found in Hollow Knight?
Currently working on a video where I break down the numerical evidence that indicates difficulty in #silksong. Is there any core aspect of enemy design which you think is missing? Thanks for any feedback in advance!
Soon I will be winding down with Silksong content. Kinda went a bit crazy with it... I've been waiting for this game, like many, for a very long time, and objectively I think there is a lot to talk about with it. I think there are still a couple of ideas I want to archive in shorts form on the channel, but other than that I have one big video I'm releasing in a few hours which I think does a good job at summarizing the difference between Hollow Knight and Silksong, and what lessons people could take from it when considering the design of a sequel.
Once the last couple of shorts are up, as well as the video, I have a couple of other games I want to dive into really soon, so unless I find something towards the tail end of Silksong that I just feel like I need to archive, expect the Silksong saga of GDL to be coming to an end relatively soon.
In saying all that, welcome all new comers, I am NOT a Silksong channel, so hopefully you enjoy learning about game design on any other game that isn't Silksong!

If you've heard of Clair Obscur Expedition 33, but not sure why people love it so much, this video should help!

Just a quick update for the channel:
