Been working on this video for a while and its finally ready to go live (at 5pm GMT today!). This video is a deep dive into why the "pick 3" mechanic is so common in Roguelikes/Roguelites, especially after the releases of Hades and then later, Balatro.
I dive into research papers on consumer and player behaviours, look at over 10 different games for examples and evidence, and provide conclusions based on the type of game YOU might be making!

Hey all! Quick channel update for the rest of December -
Videos will be reduced to between 1-2 a week, rather than the standard 4-5, and will be more so Cool Mechanic videos, as well as a few special videos planned that are a bit different from what I usually do to recap the first year of GDL. This is due to me taking a break from the computer from the 19th of December until the 5th of January.
Shorts will still be mostly 2 a day (the play is for there to be always 2 a day, but I might miss a couple), so if you mainly watch shorts then you shouldn't notice too much of a difference.
There is a chance that episode 3 of the GDL podcast wont come out on the 29th, just due to scheduling conflicts and me being away, but if not then it will come out on the 12th of January.
Thanks again for such an amazing year of GDL, next year is going to be even better I reckon!
New episode of the GDL Pod where I talk with the developers of Black Mesa (the remake of Half-Life) about their upcoming game Rogue Point goes live at 5pm GMT! It is set as a premier so feel free to hop in chat and discuss whilst it's live :)
