Europe's Plastic Waste Problem Can No Longer Be Exported. Is Europe Ready?
For decades, European countries have exported enormous quantities of plastic waste overseas—effectively shifting much of the responsibility for managing it to other parts of the world.
In 2025, Germany, the world's largest exporter of plastic waste, alone shipped more than 810,000 tonnes abroad - thats 810 Million kilos!
The United Kingdom followed closely behind, exporting more than 675,000 tonnes.
Together, these two countries exported approximately 1.485 million tonnes of plastic waste in a single year.
That is equivalent to approximately 279,000 shipping containers of plastic waste leaving Europe in just one year.
In other words, more than 760 shipping containers loaded with plastic waste departed Europe every single day.
That model is now approaching a major turning point.
From 21 November 2026, the European Union will prohibit exports of plastic waste to non-OECD countries while introducing significantly stricter controls and oversight for exports to OECD countries.
This is an important and necessary step.
Plastic waste should not simply be shipped elsewhere to become another country's environmental problem.
However, these new restrictions also expose one of Europe's greatest circular economy challenges.
The recycling infrastructure needed to manage this material within Europe simply does not yet exist at the scale required.
Millions of tonnes of mixed, contaminated and difficult-to-recycle plastics still cannot be effectively processed through conventional mechanical recycling.
As exporting plastic waste becomes increasingly restricted, more of these materials will need to be managed and recycled within Europe.
This is precisely where advanced recycling technologies, like chemical recycling, will play an increasingly important role alongside mechanical recycling.

EU Moves to End the Cheap Burning of Plastic Waste
We have been saying this for years. Now, we are finally beginning to see it happen.
The economics of burning waste are changing.
The European Union is preparing plans that would bring waste-incineration facilities into the EU Emissions Trading System, requiring operators to pay for the carbon dioxide they release.
Although the final details and implementation schedule are still being developed, the direction is becoming increasingly clear:
Burning plastic waste will become more expensive, more heavily regulated and progressively less attractive.
This will inevitably drive greater focus and investments toward proper waste separation, recycling and material recovery.
We believe this development will not stop with Europe. Governments around the world are under growing pressure to reduce emissions, prevent valuable materials from being destroyed and accelerate the transition toward a genuinely circular economy.
For decades, incineration has been treated as a convenient solution for waste that municipalities and waste-management companies could not otherwise process.
However, plastic is not simply waste.
It is a carbon-rich material that required substantial energy and resources to manufacture. When plastic is burned, that material is permanently destroyed, while its carbon is released into the atmosphere.
Wherever possible, plastic should be separated, recovered and recycled instead of simply being burned.
As the cost of incineration increases, municipalities, industries and waste-management companies will have a much stronger incentive to invest in:

♻️ Modern sorting infrastructure
♻️ Mechanical recycling
♻️ Chemical recycling
♻️ Circular feedstock production
This is the transition Corsair has been preparing for.
