🚨 NEET Mandatory for Optometry Admissions from 2026–27 — A Big Turning Point for Eye Care in India.

The Government of India has announced that NEET (UG) will now be the compulsory entrance exam for most Allied & Healthcare UG courses, including Optometry, starting from 2026–27.

The National Commission for Allied & Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) has also released 13 new UG & PG curricula, marking major reforms in healthcare education.

✅ Key Highlights

•NEET compulsory for most NCAHP-approved Allied & Healthcare courses.

•Optometry included in the NEET-based admission process.

•Direct admissions without NEET to be discontinued.

•State & Central boards instructed to alert schools nationwide.

•Updated curricula available on the NCAHP website.

⚠️ But Here Is the Bigger Concern — The Professional Identity of Optometrists.

Optometry is a 5-year professional program (4 years academics + 1-year internship). Optometrists in India:

•Independently examine patients.

•Diagnose visual problems.

•Manage refractive errors.

•Perform clinical evaluations.

•Provide essential primary eye care.

Despite these responsibilities, Optometrists still cannot use the prefix “Dr.”, even after years of clinical training.

👉 So why should future Optometrists invest 5 years of intensive education without receiving the recognition they deserve?

Globally — USA, Canada, Australia, UK, UAE, Nigeria , Africa and more — Optometrists are recognized as independent practitioners with the Doctor of Optometry (OD) title.

India must take this step too.

✊ Our Demands for the Future of the Profession.

From the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and NCAHP:

1️⃣ Recognition of Optometrists as Independent Eye Care Practitioners
In line with global standards.

2️⃣ Permission to Use Prefix “Dr.” + Suffix “Optom.”-
For graduates of recognized 4+1 Optometry programs.

3️⃣ Creation of an Independent Optometry Council of India-
To regulate, standardize, and uplift the profession.

4️⃣ Clear Career Pathways & Practice Rights-
Empowering optometrists to serve patients confidently.

Optometry Is the Backbone of Primary Eye Care:

If NEET decides our entry, then equal respect, recognition, and dignity must follow.

This isn’t just a demand —
It’s a movement.

A movement for justice, recognition, and the future of Optometry in India.

Together, we raise our voice for every student, intern, and practitioner.

Together, we will shape the future.
Together, we will earn the respect our profession deserves.
