It aired on March 21 on WCCO-TV Channel 4 News, where I had the honor of contributing to this important feature.
The legacy of Frederick McKinley Jones.
An innovator.
A problem solver.
A pioneer whose work transformed global medicine, food preservation, and transportation refrigeration.
Not every legacy survives the test of time.
But this one did.
He started with skill.
He repaired machinery.
Built radios.
Engineered sound systems.
Solved problems others couldn’t.
And people talked.
His mechanical brilliance traveled through conversation, until it reached the right businessman who was listening.
That conversation led to a partnership which led to the first mobile refrigeration system and the founding of Thermo King, which continues Jones’ work today by transforming food transport, medicine logistics, and global standards of living.
Here’s the lesson:
Credibility must travel.
Jones didn’t get lucky.
His reputation moved ahead of him because he consistently demonstrated value in an era stacked with odds that could have stopped most.
Even though most households don’t know his name, his legacy reminds us:
Impact is not defined by recognition in the moment, but by the lives improved long after the work is done.
That’s true legacy-driven leadership.
True legacy-driven leadership isn’t always visible in the moment. But its impact becomes undeniable over time.

Yet most professionals believe they are part of that group.
That gap is where many careers quietly stall.
Recently, someone completed my Executive Leadership Operating System (ELOS) assessment across the 7 Pillars of Self-Leadership Mastery, and his feedback captured something powerful:
“I just finished the survey. I’m very fortunate that even during my corporate career, going back at least 20 years, my answers would have been pretty similar.
The challenge will be people being very honest. Typically, we hold a higher view of ourselves than the world around us.
If I had this assessment early in my career, it would have sped up the process for me.”
That insight highlights the real value of assessment.
The power isn’t just taking the assessment.
The power is telling yourself the truth.
Most professionals don’t struggle because they lack effort.
They struggle because they lack accurate self-awareness.
Without honest awareness:
1. Strengths remain underutilized
2. Blind spots go unchallenged
3. Growth slows without anyone realizing why
Leadership transformation always begins with one uncomfortable step:
Seeing yourself clearly.
Because once clarity arrives, everything else becomes possible.
