Save the Aravalli: A Plea for Nature’s Backbone
The Aravalli Hills were not created by a definition on paper, and they cannot be erased by a single stroke of a pen.
The Aravalli hides countless gems within its bosom, but its greatest treasures are water, forest, and life itself. Standing tall in the heart of Rajasthan, this mountain range acts as a barrier against the harshness of the Thar Desert, keeping eastern Rajasthan green and fertile. Stretching approximately 695 kilometers through Rajasthan and Haryana to Delhi's Raisina Hills, these hills and forests have prevented these regions from turning into a wasteland.
The Crisis of Definition
Yet, it is being claimed that if a landform is not 100 meters higher than its adjacent ground, it is not a "hill." By this logic, nearly 91% of the Aravallis are no longer considered hills and, therefore, do not require protection. This justification allows for the grinding down of mountains, the uprooting of forests, and the tearing open of the earth to extract hidden minerals. In the wake of lost greenery, the buildings of modern civilization will rise while nature slowly dies.
It is now clear that those who can exile even living animals through paperwork place no value on these mountains. For years, illegal marble and stone mining have left the Aravallis scarred and wounded. Now, an "all-consuming" greed seeks to swallow it whole.
An Ecological Treasure
The Aravalli Range is one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world and the environmental backbone of North India. It serves as a natural bridge or Ecotone Zone between the desert on one side and the Indo-Gangetic plains on the other. It is home to flora and fauna found nowhere else on Earth, such as the rare Portulaca bharat flower. It provides habitat for leopards, hyenas, sambar deer, nilgai, various lizards, snakes, and countless resident and migratory birds. Rivers like the Luni, Sabarmati, and Banas are born here.
A Call to Action
The very mountains that once provided refuge to Maharana Pratap are now themselves in danger. Does changing the definition of a mountain on paper change the reality of nature? Does our responsibility end simply by refusing to call a mountain a "mountain," despite it protecting us for centuries?
We demand an immediate reconsideration and withdrawal of this decision. To save the Aravalli, all mining must be stopped immediately. Otherwise, these mountains will one day vanish in silence, and we won’t even have the time left to regret it.
