BeforeTheBillions

Here are a few photos from last Friday’s Big Dig Day volunteer event with NCR and Cargill where we helped build an outdoor classroom for the students at Finch Elementary School in Atlanta, Georgia.

I was honored to be nominated as a team captain, and even more inspired by the amazing people I got to meet and work with. The kids were excited and loved the work.

This new outdoor classroom will be a space where students will learn, grow, and explore for many years. I’m proud to have been part of something so meaningful!

I want to take a moment to thank everyone who has supported me and my goals. With the help of my network, I’ve achieved some great milestones in a short time.

Since last year, I’ve:
🔹 Been featured in publications and blogs like Business Insider, Cargill, ForbesBLK, and Urban League of Greater Atlanta Young Professionals
🔹 Spoken at tech events, workforce development programs, and mentorship organizations such as Atlanta Tech Meetup Group, McClinton Scholars, and Technologists of Color
🔹 Landed a new role as a Data Engineer, one of the largest privately held companies in the world
🔹 Been a guest on podcasts like TechtualTalk and Talk That Tech
🔹 Got re-monetized on YouTube

Just 6 months of consistency can change your life. Thank you for being part of my journey. There are bigger opportunities are on the way!

BeforeTheBillions

At the start of this year, I faced one of the toughest challenges of my career. I lost my job during a brutal job market.

I realized that all I had was my job title. Without it, I felt lost.

I didn’t have a strong network, and I learned how important relationships are in getting new opportunities. It wasn’t just about skills or experience it was about who knew me and knew my worth.

It was time to lock in.

I didn’t let my job status or how much money I saved define my value. I wasn’t just an engineer. I have more to offer the world.

🔥 I began public speaking, even when I kept hearing “no” after applying for speaking engagements.
🔥 I volunteered my time to help kids and those in need.
🔥 I enrolled in leadership training to expand my skills and mindset.

I overcame my circumstances. I landed a new job with a great company ranked in the top 15 privately held companies in the US. I lost a lot, but gained it all back and then some.

I stayed consistent in sharing my journey, and because of that, I was blessed to be featured in Business Insider, ForbesBLK, The Urban League of Greater Atlanta, and Shoutout Atlanta.

The best way to get a job in tech for 2025 is to create motion.

After six months of job searching, I realized I needed to showcase my skills and the actions I was taking to land my next role. Here’s what worked for me:
• Attended every networking event, conference, bootcamp, and training I could find.
• Paid to join industry organizations and had my resume reviewed by experts.
• Leveraged career coaching provided by my previous employer.
• Posted weekly on social media to highlight my work and progress.

Not everyone has a strong network, but building your professional brand is a strategy you can control. Posting about your journey can help you connect with new opportunities and expand your reach.

Make your friends before you need them.

I went 6 months without a full time job.

I applied to close to 500 jobs, went on 50+ interviews, and heard “no” from every job I applied to. I missed 26 paychecks and drained over $30K that I had spent 4 years saving after buying my house. That money is gone.

I didn’t give up. What saved me was my skills, experience, degree, work ethic, and network.

There were people who called me lazy, even as I went to every conference, networking event, and bootcamp I could find. I volunteered, spoke at events, and posted videos of myself studying for interviews and sharing my layoff journey. Some said it looked like I had “too much time on my hands.”

Until it paid off.

I’m now working for a large company ranked in the top 15 privately held family owned companies in the US. I’m working to impact billions of people’s lives daily. I’m helping to make a positive change in the world through data engineering.

I’m sharing this to say that If you stay active in building your personal and professional brand, opportunities will come that you never thought you could achieve.

What’s one thing you’re doing today to improve your personal or professional brand? Share in the comments. I’d love to hear your story.
