2022 was a season of learning for me. The challenges of each video made me a better programmer. From learning to mod minecraft for the first time, to creating more stable physics simulations and using AI, I've been having a blast! This channel has transformed into something more meaningful to me than I could have ever imagined. There is nothing I would rather be doing with my time! I’m also incredibly grateful that you all stick around even when I try drastically different video styles. Most channels would feel pigeonholed into only one format of video by their viewers, but I feel freedom to follow what is new and most exciting to me. It’s crazy to think how far we’ve come from where things began on this channel.
It all started with my search for a creative outlet over a decade ago in 2011. I was making Rube Goldberg machines and contraptions in my parent’s basement, and decided to create a YouTube channel to share them. I was too shy to talk or show my face on camera, but I hoped people would enjoy seeing the strange ideas I’d come up with. My early videos were TERRIBLE (I like to leave them public on this channel as a reminder that I can always improve). In 2013, I started to lose hope for my YouTube pipe dream and I stopped posting. Years passed, and it could have all ended there… until one fateful day in 2017. I came home from college during winter break, I had the nostalgic urge to make another video. I assumed most of the old subscribers had long since forgotten about my channel, and nobody would really care. Nevertheless, I failed countless times until finally I posted a contraption titled “Piano Rube Goldberg”. Much to my surprise, the comment section was filled with the nicest messages I had ever received. If it wasn’t for the outpouring of support from those early viewers (now friends!) I likely wouldn’t have continued. That was miracle #1.
Next, I started to get more a more interested in synchronizing chain reactions and physics to music (inspired by the genius of Ok-Go). I couldn’t figure out why I found music and video sync so enjoyable. When I listen to a song, most of the time I can close my eyes and “see” the visuals I think would match in my head. I stumbled across the term Synesthesia, used to describe the experience of one sense crossing wires with another sense. From the Wikipedia page: “Chromesthesia or sound-to-color synesthesia is a type of synesthesia in which sound involuntarily evokes an experience of color, shape, and movement.” After reading I had a bit of an “AHA” moment where I realized this is probably what’s going on in my brain, but with an association to physics and projectile motion as well. I don’t think this makes me special by any sense. I’m guessing most people have some form of synesthesia. If you are subscribed to me, then maybe the odds are higher you do! Although I was inspired with this new revelation, I didn’t have space or materials to build things in real life while I was at college, so I decided to try computer simulation instead. In an unbelievable bout of luck, “Line Rider - Mountain King” went viral while being only the 3rd simulated video I posted on this channel. That was miracle #2, and from then on, I was hooked.
Where is this leading to in the future? Music videos help me stay focused and feel the music. In my opinion, all music deserves interesting visuals to accompany it (static image music videos are lame!). I will not rest until all music has a customized music video, or my idea list runs dry. Thankfully my idea list has always grown 10x faster than I can create them, so it looks like I’ll be creating for a long time :) I could not have made it this far without all of your support. Thanks for being with me and I'm very excited for the years to come!
