Ever tried melting your Neocolors instead of using them with water? 🖍️🔥

In today’s studio experiment, I’m putting Caran d'Ache Neocolor II water-soluble wax pastels to the test using heat. By melting them down, we get these rich, encaustic-like textures and soft, waxy layers without needing a full encaustic setup. Plus, because they're water-soluble, you can still come back in with a wet brush and lift or blend the melted pigment!

I wanted to see what happens when you mix Golden Open Acrylics with bold coffee on tissue paper, and the texture results are so cool. If you want to make your own custom collage papers, the new video breaks down the full process, the exact tools I used (like the Stabilo Woody and sensory stones), and how to get the coffee thickness just right so it isn't sticky.

My new video is up! We are experimenting with kitchen lithography using household aluminum foil, Diet Coke, and grease crayons.

It is a surprisingly simple way to get gritty, hand-pulled print textures at your kitchen table without needing a press, heavy limestone, or toxic acids. In the video, I walk through the entire process step-by-step—including a few mistakes I made (like getting oily fingerprints all over the plate) and how to fix them.

I also show a really cool tissue paper cleanup technique I learned from Ruth Printed Home to make transparent collage papers so none of your leftover ink goes to waste.

I am not good about using a sketchbook. I do like using these little 2”x6” scraps of watercolor paper to work out new ideas.
I used my embossing tool to make marks in the paper and then went over it with charcoal pencil, soft pastels and water.
Love the scratchy marks and the way the pastel went over them. 😍
