An easy way to remember the relationship between spinal cord segments and vertebral levels
The vertebral column grows more rapidly than the spinal cord. As a result, the spinal cord segments lie progressively higher than their corresponding vertebrae as we move down the vertebral column.
This relationship can be difficult to memorise, but here is a simple way to remember it:
Cervical region: Add 1.
For example, the 4th cervical vertebra contains the 5th cervical cord segment.
Upper thoracic region: Add 2.
For example, the 4th thoracic vertebra contains the 6th thoracic cord segment.
The remaining levels follow the pattern shown in the accompanying picture.
