In a recent interview with Time Magazine, President Donald Trump expressed confidence that Saudi Arabia will soon join the Abraham Accords, the US-brokered agreements that normalized relations between Israel and several Arab nations, including the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. Trump stated, "I think Saudi Arabia will end up being in the Abraham Accords... soon. Not a very long way."
This prediction aligns with Trump's broader Middle East strategy, which aims to counter Iran's regional influence and promote economic cooperation. He envisions that Saudi Arabia's inclusion in the accords could pave the way for other countries, such as Pakistan and Indonesia, to follow suit.
The statement has come amid reports that the United States is poised to offer Saudi Arabia an arms package worth more than $100bn, the Reuters news agency reports, citing six sources familiar with the matter.
However, Saudi Arabia has historically conditioned normalization with Israel on the establishment of a Palestinian state, a stance that has complicated direct engagement. The kingdom has also expressed concerns over Israeli actions in Gaza, which have led to delays in advancing normalization talks.

On April 24, 2025, the Trump administration confirmed that ICE agents arrested Mahmoud Khalil, a Syrian-born US green card holder and Columbia University activist, without a warrant in March. Khalil, known for his involvement in pro-Palestinian protests, is being detained in Louisiana, and missed the birth of his son after ICE denied his temporary release.
The Department of Homeland Security acknowledged the "warrantless arrest", claiming "exigent circumstances" as agents believed Khalil might flee—an allegation his lawyers dispute, noting no agents have testified he posed a flight risk.
Though not charged with any crime, Khalil is facing deportation for alleged immigration fraud and a foreign policy threat designation issued by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, using a rarely invoked law.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte met with US President Donald Trump on April 24 to discuss the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and Russia's role as a long-term threat to Euro-Atlantic security. Rutte emphasised NATO's unified stance on Russia as a security threat and urged the US not to pressure Ukraine into accepting a peace deal favourable to Moscow.
A proposed peace deal might involve recognising Russia's control over Crimea, limiting Ukraine's NATO membership, lifting sanctions on Russia, and promoting US-Russia economic cooperation. However, Russia has refused to agree to a ceasefire and continues to make maximalist demands.
Ukrainian President Zelensky insists on a full and unconditional ceasefire, while Russia has threatened to use nuclear weapons in response to actions it considers hostile. The US has presented a clear peace proposal, but Russia remains unwilling to move forward.

The US Justice Department has terminated USD 811 million in grants intended for crime victims, including funding for trauma recovery centers, mental healthcare for police officers, and services like sign language interpretation. The cuts affected 365 competitive grants from the Office of Justice Programs (OJP), which had been approved to award about USD 3 billion in fiscal year 2024.
This decision is part of a broader push by the Trump administration to reduce federal operations, particularly targeting programs related to diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and refugee assistance. The process has been described as disorganized, resulting in the dismissal and rehiring of federal staff.
Following media attention on cuts, including one to a pet-friendly domestic violence shelter grant, the department reversed some decisions and restored aid to certain providers, such as shelters in Connecticut and Maryland. A Justice Department spokesperson did not immediately comment, but officials clarified the cuts were selective to avoid disrupting victim services, and Attorney General Pam Bondi reiterated the department’s commitment to supporting crime victims.

Former Doña Ana County Magistrate Judge Joel Cano and his wife Nancy Cano were arrested on April 24 after federal agents raided their Las Cruces home. They are charged with evidence tampering for allegedly harboring Cristhian Ortega-Lopez, an undocumented immigrant and suspected member of Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua gang.
Ortega-Lopez, who crossed illegally into the US in December 2023, was hired by Nancy Cano for home repairs and later allowed to live in their guesthouse. He was arrested at their home in February 2025 and now faces federal firearm charges, with potential penalties of up to 15 years in prison.
Investigators also seized firearms from the home of the Canos' daughter, April, some of which Ortega-Lopez had posed with on social media. Court exhibits include images of him dining with the Cano family and spending holidays at their home.

The United States is poised to offer Saudi Arabia an arms package worth well over $100 billion, Reuters has reported citing six sources with direct knowledge of the issue. The source said that the proposal was being lined up for announcement during US President Donald Trump's visit to the kingdom in May.
The offered package comes after the administration of former US President Joe Biden unsuccessfully tried to finalize a defence pact with Riyadh as part of a broad deal that envisioned Saudi Arabia normalizing ties with Israel, Reuters reported.
“Our defense relationship with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is stronger than ever under President Trump's leadership. Maintaining our security cooperation remains an important component of this partnership and we will continue to work with Saudi Arabia to address their defence needs,” a US Defence official said.

A powerful car bomb in Moscow has killed General Yaroslav Moskalik, a senior Russian military officer, just as Trump’s peace envoy landed in the Russian capital for urgent talks with President Putin.
The assassination adds to a growing string of high-profile attacks on pro-Kremlin figures over the past two years, all believed to be linked to Ukrainian covert operations. The timing of the bombing has cast a shadow over the new U.S.-led diplomatic effort to end the war in Ukraine.
