"Someone asked a clergyman, “Why wasn’t Jesus born in the twentieth century in America?”
The clergyman shrugged and replied, “In America? That simply couldn’t happen. First of all, where would he find a virgin? And secondly, where would he find three wise men? Without a virgin mother and three wise men, how could Jesus be born?”

I have also heard that in one church, a priest invited all women who were still virgins to stand up.
Only one woman, accompanied by her young daughter, stood up.
Surely she must be the mother, and the priest then said, “Do you think you are still a virgin? You are a mother!”
She replied, “Yes, I am truly a mother—but this little girl is still a virgin, even though she cannot stand on her own feet.”

Truth exists. It does not require your effort to invent it. Truth must be discovered, not contrived. And what prevents us from uncovering it? We have been taught so many falsehoods—a veritable mountain of deception. This barrier perpetually distorts truth, denying our hearts the ability to reflect what is.

Truth is not a logical conclusion. Truth is existence, reality. It has always been here—it is always here. Only truth exists. So why can’t we find it? How is it that we fail to recognize it? Because from our very childhood we are taught lies, prejudices, ideologies, religions, philosophies… all of which lead you astray.

Truth is not an idea. You need not be Hindu, Muslim, or Christian to know it. In fact, if you are Hindu, you may never know it—being Hindu can blind you. What do we imply when we say, “I am Hindu,” or “I am Muslim,” or “I am Jewish”? We imply, “I have an idea of truth—an idea drawn from the Bible, the Koran, or the Gita. I don’t truly know truth; I just know many things about it.” And that so-called knowledge is the very problem that must be resolved.

We all desire truth, but we don’t start out with a disinterested desire for true information or truth in the abstract. Our desire for truth starts with our most basic response to pain, which, as the Buddha noted, is twofold: One, we’re bewildered as to why it’s happening. Two, we search for someone who might know how to put an end to the pain.

Ego (buddhism podcast)

Our desire for truth comes from this combination of bewilderment and search. We’d like to find the reality of a true happiness, untainted by pain, a happiness that doesn’t disappoint us. From that desire, we search for people who are true in having done what it takes to gain genuine knowledge about how to put an end to pain, and who are willing to give us true information about what they’ve learned. As we mature, we want to be true in following the path set out by that true information. In other words, we turn our desire for truth into a determination to be true. This gives us three kinds of truth—the truth of a reality, the truth of perceptions and statements, and the truth of a person—all of which come under the perfection of truth.

In this video, we explore one of the most debated aspects of Buddhist teachings: why the Buddha refused to answer certain metaphysical questions. We examine how misunderstandings of his teachings—both from outsiders and even from within the tradition—led to misinterpretations, such as equating Nirvana with eternal death.
