I create, make tutorials, and cover the news for all things Fortnite Creative and UEFN!

I push for innovation in the creative scene. If you haven't noticed, everything feels the same these days. I want to change that.

How exactly, you may be wondering? By making easy to intermediate tutorials for new or experienced Fortnite Creators to follow to improve their islands. I also keep you updated on the news surrounding FNC and UEFN.

Beyond tutorials, I’m the creator behind Dreamlands and Dreamlands 2 with unique characters like Joe, a humble pizza extraordinaire, and Kreply, a curious pawnshop owner. Dreamlands is a large-scale Fortnite Creative/UEFN story-driven map series. It blends cinematic storytelling, exploration, and combat with a unique lore players unravel as they progress. Dreamlands isn’t just a map, it’s a narrative experience with custom environments, dialogue, and mechanics that push UEFN beyond its limits.

So stop reading this and go watch/play some of my stuff!

UPDATE ON UNITY IN FORTNITE'S ECOSYSTEM!

Tim Sweeney (CEO of Epic) updated us on twitter about it, he said in response to ‪@TomJanky‬ ,

"It’s in development but isn’t nearing release yet.

It’s not pixel streaming. Rather, it’s a gameplay networking protocol designed by Unity (resembling the ones existing in engines already) that downloads some content prior to starting, then runs most gameplay logic on the server, and then simulates and predicts frames on the player’s machine to compensate for latency and run at full frame rate.

The initial version will be aimed at running compatible reasonably-small, self-contained Unity games, then will scale up from there. It will go through a similar moderation pipeline. We expect localization will be by the developer (rather than automated), an option we hope to support in UEFN by the time of launch.

UEFN features are expanding over time too. I recommend building today with the tools available today, and evaluating as the new options and features come online."

Tim also mentioned later in replies that cosmetics should be available too eventually!

"We aim for this to be an option (not all Unity games would make sense with interoperable cosmetics) but we aren’t sure about timing."

And a Epic dev named Marcus Wassmer clarified that Unity games will be included in the payout system + support in game transactions.

"The plan of record here is that games in the creator economy play by the same set of rules regardless of which toolset was used to create them (UEFN, FN Creative, Unity). So, yes to being part of the engagement payout, and yes to 'the' in-island transaction system."

So key takeaways,
- It is not streaming, you download and run the game while the server handles core logic.
- It will only support smaller Unity games at first, AND of course expand into the future
- It is still early in development and not close to release. So I'd say don't expect it this year.
- This will not replace UEFN, it will exist alongside it (if it wasn't obvious)
- Cosmetics are planned to be supported (but no timeline)
- Unity games are included in the engagement payout pool + support in game transactions.

CUSTOM ITEMS & INVENTORIES should be out of experimental next update! (v40.20) on April 16th, meaning you will be able to finally publish with the feature enabled!

Keep in mind, this is ITEMS, not weapons. Custom weapons are coming, hopefully this year in Q3. The roadmap says it's Confidence: Medium, so it COULD slip to Q4. Hopefully it doesn't 💀

Anyways, I will make an updated deep dive tutorial after it comes out, but I covered how to create custom items in this video https://youtu.be/-Ys-UU39rw4?si=fhcV6...

I also went over them in my most recent video, focusing on custom lightsabers/force powers/augments for star wars islands https://youtu.be/FfsB5z2iDqk?si=L5s6T...

You can read where Epic announced it here -> forums.unrealengine.com/t/v40-20-known-issues-pre-…

Star Wars Part 2 is out now! It covers custom lightsabers/force powers and lightsaber augments, importing the really cool lightsaber workbench Epic made into any project and a bunch of stuff I missed in part 1!

Epic will be updating the rules around spam maps on April 14!

"Starting April 14 we’re expanding content pre-checks. If your thumbnail is found to be identical or near identical to another island, now including your own, you won’t be able to publish. If they are very similar, you will receive a warning"

Previously, this only applied to other maps, but now it will be expanded to the same maps from each creator. It should help alleviate a lot of issues with the ecosystem right now. But it also might hurt creators who do make original content, but with similar thumbnails. What do you all think? I think daily/weekly publishing limits are still the best way to go. Realistically, no one will publish more than 1-3 games a day, so I'm still unsure why Epic haven't done it yet.

Also, my tutorial for Star Wars part 2 should be out tomorrow, which goes over custom lightsabers/force powers/augmentations with verse and a lot of other stuff I missed in part 1. (3 weeks late I know💀)

Epic announced quite a lot of upcoming stability fixes to UEFN, including speeding up Pushing Changes/cook times, anti-bug detection and live edit changes, that should be coming in the next few months.

This is part of their ongoing push since late last year on fixing major stability problems and pains in UEFN.

If anyone missed it, Epic are finally adding a rule against spam maps in Discover

1.9.1 - “No one likes spam. Do not publish multiple copies of the same island or metadata in an attempt to manipulate search ranking, engagement, or visibility from the same account, alternate accounts or teammate accounts.”

Starting March 11th this should go into effect.

They will also be rollling out new automated tooling in the coming weeks to prevent spam islands from being published.

I feel like this should have been a rule years ago, and it really comes down to if Epic will enforce it or not, BUT it's cool to see actual punishments for such a huge problem that makes creative and UEFN actively significantly worse.

This also needs to work for ALL the methods bad actors are using to spam maps e.g multiple accounts spam. And address workarounds people find quickly, but this very nice. Let's see how this will go. As more space in Discover = more opportunities for actual creators to get into Discover!

Custom player animations tutorial should be out TOMORROW.

It's taking longer than expected, but it will be very comprehensive. From importing and retargeting animations, control rigs, all the way to using Verse to make custom emotes/animations that play on the character toggled from an input + supports multiplayer.

Epic have just addressed the current problems plaguing Fortnite Discover...

Here's what Joey, Director, Product on Discover , said,

"I want to acknowledge that we see this, agree it’s frustrating, and we’re partnering across Discover, Publishing, and Moderation to address it.

We made some changes last year to how we filter similar content from Discover, and reintroduced developer spacing in rows. There are gaps, and some developers are publishing islands across multiple accounts to get around it.

There’s absolutely still more to be done. We have some changes going live this week that’ll reduce the amount of duplicative content hitting Discover, along with a larger effort to automatically detect and block duplicative content on publish.

Prevention is always going to be a bit of a cat-and-mouse game, so we can’t share every detail, but we’re definitely not ignoring this."

For changes, we might see this week,
- Multi-account preventions
- Fewer duplicate maps
- Hopefully more room for everyone on Discover.
among other changes, unannounced.

I love it when Epic finally speaks about the core problems plaguing Fortnite Creative right now. But I also hate how it feels like each announcement for changes coming is empty, as everything they do gets circumvented time and time again. It also sucks we have to bully Epic into saying anything about how things really are and not just have... You know... open communication.

Hopefully, they whack the mole eventually. What do you think?

Also, there should be a dedicated thread for these issues on the forums soon. If you want to give your thoughts right now, here's the Twitter thread - x.com/FNCreate/status/2021669512727376297
