🔲 DOES TESLA PLUNGE OFF THE CLIFF IN 2025? WORLDWIDE SALES ARE OFF TO A VERY BAD START IN JANUARY THIS YEAR...

👉 Elon Musk, the world's richest man and an adviser to President Trump, is leading a team called the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE.
He is the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and owner of X social media.

👉 Tesla's global sales are off to a very bad start for 2025. The figures gets worse in most parts of the world. In Germany, where Tesla has a Gigafactory, Tesla was the longtime EV sales leader, sales declined a whole 60% in January. Tesla’s sales were also down 63% in France and 75% in Spain in January.
The Netherlands was -42%, sales also dropped 12% in the UK in January even as all-electric vehicle sales rose. "No Tesla cracked the UK's top 10 best-seller list last month, something that has regularly happened in the past,"
Australia dropped by 33% and one trend that's especially worth watching is what's happened in China, which makes up more than one third of Tesla's global sales. In China Tesla dropped 11.5% in January.

Would you like to discuss the reasons?

🔲 EXPLAINABLE AI FOR SAFE AND TRUSTWORTHY AUTONOMOUS DRIVING. REVIEW. THE SOLUTION IS SAFE X.

👉 Artificial Intelligence (AI) has useful applications in the perception and planning tasks in autonomous driving (AD), offering better performance than traditional methods. However, complex AI systems raise safety concerns for AD. To address this, explainable AI (XAI) techniques are suggested.

👉 This text reviews existing literature on XAI for safe AD and analyzes the necessary requirements in three areas: data, model, and agency. It highlights five key contributions of XAI for safe AD

-interpretable design

-interpretable surrogate models

-interpretable monitoring

-auxiliary explanations

-interpretable validation.

and proposes a framework called SafeX for integrating these methods.

🔲 AUTONOMOUS DRIVING BEHAVIOURS FOR VULNERABLE ROAD USERS.

Interaction of pedestrians and cyclists with ADS-DVs and how to respond to the programmed behaviors of such vehicles.

Authors Automotive Intelligence team in KPMG Consulting and Yukie Koyano
published: 2024-11-21

👉 Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs), which mainly include pedestrians and cyclists, face a higher risk of injury or death in crashes with vehicles compared to passengers inside protected vehicles. It is essential for Automated Driving Systems-Driven Vehicles (ADS-DVs) to consider interactions with VRUs during their development and deployment. VRUs vary in appearance, movement, and behavior, making them complex to detect and predict.

👉 Detecting VRUs can be challenging due to their physical characteristics and unpredictable behaviors. Errors in detection or prediction can lead to severe consequences, so ADS-DVs must account for possible mistakes and have a margin for correction. Object and event detection and response (OEDR) play a crucial role in how ADS-DVs monitor their surroundings and respond in real-time.

👉 Various factors, such as weather and the presence of traffic devices, influence VRU behavior. Additionally, VRUs can behave unpredictably due to different internal and external circumstances. To ensure safety, ADS-DVs should be designed to follow traffic rules, predicting VRU movements based on their tracking of the environment and the context of traffic.

👉 VRUs should expect ADS-DVs to comply with traffic rules, as this consistency is vital for safety. Although both VRUs and human drivers may not always follow the law, ADS-DVs must maintain adherence to traffic regulations. Users must trust that ADS-DVs will reliably follow these rules to ensure safety on the roads.

🔲 ANALYZING VULNERABLE ROAD USER INJURY RISK.

Paper: Baseline vulnerable road user injury risk in multiple U.S. dense urban driving environments

Authors: Eamon T. Campolettano, John M. Scanlon, Ilan Kadar,Lev Y. Lavy,Daniel C. Moura &Kristofer D. Kusano

Published: 01 Nov 2024

👉 Understanding and modeling baseline driving safety risk in busy urban areas is essential for analyzing the safety impact of automated driving systems (ADS). This study aimed to use real-world collision data involving vulnerable road users (VRUs) to measure collision rates, crash severity, and injury risks without specific injury outcome data.

👉 From over 500 million vehicle miles, 335 collision events with VRUs were confirmed through video analysis, including 126 pedestrians, 144 cyclists, and 65 motorcyclists. Anonymized video and sensor data from vehicles with Nexar dash cameras were used. The collisions were assessed for factors like collision angles and time of day, using existing injury risk models to estimate injury severity.

👉 Results showed vehicle speeds at impact were between 0 to 39 mph, while VRUs ranged from 0 to 27 mph. Most events (95%) had a low injury risk (under 10% for MAIS3+). Collisions involving occlusions or unexpected VRU actions had higher injury risk estimates. It is estimated that around 55 individuals could suffer moderate injuries (MAIS2+) and approximately 6 could face serious injuries (MAIS3+).

🔲 RIVIAN OUTPACES FORD AND MERCEDES IN US ELECTRICAL VAN MARKET 2024.

👉 The 2024 US sales numbers were:
Rivian Commercial Van: 13,423 +66%
Ford E-Transit: 12,610 +66%
Chevrolet BrightDrop: 1,529 +300%
Mercedes-Benz eSprinter: 828 +new

👉 Most of the Rivian vans likely were delivered to Amazon, which contracted the automaker to deliver 100,000 electrified vans by 2030. While both had an exclusive agreement at first, Rivian was able to wiggle out of the Amazon-only agreement while retaining its deal to build the vehicles.

👉 Fords's E-Transit success is backed by Ford's powerhouse network of more than 650 Commercial Vehicle Centers across the U.S. plus over 2,300 electric-vehicle certified dealers. One of the A-clients are DHL and USPS.

👉 GM: A lineup of 300 dealerships willing to sell the Chevy BrightDrop in 2025 is a massive shift from ancient 7 dealers offering the EV van in the U.S. in 2024.

👉 Mercedes-Benz: The eSprinter, the first fully electric van in North America from Mercedes-Benz USA, bolstered sales of 828 total units year-to-date.

MB Vans: Worldwide EV sales in Q4 are up (+59% compared to Q3) reaching 6,900 units sold mainly due to the ongoing ramp-up of the new eSprinter despite a subdued market environment for electric vehicles in Europe. Full year sales of eVans reached 19,500 units sold worldwide keeping up a global EV share of 5%.

👉 The good is, the US EV Van market is rushing up. The sad truth is that the van market just isn't yet embracing EVs in any kind of actual volume.
