Contrail is also the son of Deep Impact (who should also be added in the umamusume franchise btw) one of Japan's best horses ever. Did you know that in the 1992 Kikuka Sho, when Rice Shower won the race, the booing was mostly because of another horse named Kyoei Bowgun? He was one of only two horses at the time to actually take the lead from Mihono Bourbon.
Bowgun exhausted Mihono Bourbon because of Bourbon’s competitive nature and desire to stay in front throughout the race. Bourbon’s jockey, Sadahiro Kojima, couldn’t restrain him well enough. As a result, Bourbon didn’t have enough stamina left for the final stretch, and Rice Shower overtook him.
Mihono Bourbon finished second, Rice Shower first, and Bowgun placed 16th. Bowgun had an unimpressive racing career, and two years after the race(when he retired), he was almost sent to slaughter because the cost of caring for him was too high. He had only won one G2 and one G3 race, and his pedigree wasn’t particularly strong, making him a poor choice as a breeding stallion. However, Bowgun was bought by Matsumoto Kaori, and he lived to the ripe old age of 33.
While Rice Shower wasn’t that hated after the Kikuka Sho, he truly enraged people by beating Mejiro McQueen in the Tenno Sho(although some might say people loved him even more because of it).
Rice Shower video is up featuring the historic Metal X Hip Hop collab of Anthrax and Public Enemy which paved the path to the genre of Nu Metal. Bands like Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park probably wouldn’t have existed without these behemoths of their respective genres.
