The Song of Kwezu, the Curly-Maned Lion

In the sun-drenched plains of old Afrika,
before the rivers carved their patient paths
and before the acacia trees stretched their thorned fingers to the sky,
there walked a lion unlike any other.

His name was Kwezu,
the Lion of the Twisting Mane.

While other lions bore manes straight as the spears of hunters,
Kwezu’s mane curled like storm winds,
spiraling in amber coils that shimmered when dawn kissed them.
The elders said the curls were a sign—
that he was chosen by the Spirits-Who-Breathe-the-Grass,
guardians of the savannah from the time before memory.

Kwezu’s roar rolled across the plains
not like thunder,
but like deep drums calling warriors home.
Animals paused when they heard it—
not in fear, but in recognition.
For Kwezu brought balance.

When drought threatened,
he walked to the Old Stones where rain spirits slept
and shook his curly mane three times.
Clouds gathered like cattle at dusk,
and the sky’s great waters returned.

When hyenas grew bold
and circled the grazing herds in wicked laughter,
Kwezu rose from the tall grass,
his mane rippling like wild fire,
and the hyenas scattered,
their shadows fleeing before their paws could.

But Kwezu’s greatest tale
was the one whispered in the years of the Grand Dust,
when the sun burned too fiercely
and even the baobabs cried for relief.

A great fire swept the land—
a wall of red teeth and black smoke.
Animals panicked.
Flames swallowed their paths.
Hope thinned like mist at noon.

And then came Kwezu.

He leaped through the smoke,
curly mane glowing like a crown forged by the sun itself.
With roar after roar he parted the panicked herds,
leading them toward the Hidden Gorge,
a secret cleft known only to the lion spirits of old.

There, sheltered by ancient stone,
the herds survived.
The flames raged,
the sky reddened,
but the creatures of Afrika were safe.

When the fire passed,
Kwezu climbed to the high ridge,
his mane singed at the tips
yet curling proudly still.
The winds—those same winds that remember heroes—
carried his roar across the healing plains.

Some say his spirit roams even now,
curl-maned and watchful,
a guardian woven into the breath of Afrika itself.

And when the grass rustles in spirals,
or dawn glitters gold on the savannah,
the animals remember—
and whisper:

“Kwezu walks.”

The penis snake, also known as the penis cobra (though not a real cobra), is actually a species called Atretochoana eiselti. It's a rare, legless amphibian — not a snake — that looks surprisingly like, well, its nickname suggests. Native to parts of South America, it was rediscovered in Brazil in recent years after being thought extinct. Despite its appearance, it's completely harmless and lives in freshwater habitats, likely feeding on small fish and invertebrates. Scientists still don't know a ton about it, which only adds to its weird and fascinating vibe.
