Today is my Birthday, guys, and I feel called to share some Birthday wisdom.

If I learned anything from being alive is that what we believe can hold us back more than anything.

One thing I used to believe was that success was for those with a “leg up”. Nepo babies, wunderkinds. And that poor “nobody” immigrants like me had to work 10x as hard.

And I did. For many, many years. Staying up late trying to mix my songs, songwriting sessions 6 days a week, bumming on friends’ couches just trying to make things happen.

But things only happened when I recognized that burning myself out did nothing. That instead of working harder I needed to work smarter.

To give you an example, one small mix playback trick I learned from @billycentenero not only dramatically improved my mixes but my relationship with my own ear. Another small trick I learned from Nathan at @thehitlab (mastering engineer behind “Espresso”) completely shifted how my low end sounded. Those tweaks didn’t burn me out at all. Actually, they were kinda easy.

Achieving your dreams doesn’t have to equal selling your soul or destroying your body. You should be able to thrive in music (or whatever you aspire to!) while feeling healthy and happy.
