India Reaffirms Commitment to Global Nuclear Safety at 10th CNS Review Meeting in Vienna

India Participates in 10th Review Meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety

Mumbai / Vienna: India actively participated in the 10th Review Meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS), held from April 13 to 24, 2026, at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Headquarters in Vienna, Austria. The prestigious global gathering marked thirty years of the Convention and witnessed participation from delegations representing 86 countries.

A 15-member Indian delegation, led by Shri A. K. Balasubrahmanian, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), represented the country at the high-level review meeting. The delegation included experts from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), and the Embassy of India in Vienna.

During the two-week-long deliberations, the Indian delegation presented a comprehensive overview of India’s nuclear power programme, with a strong focus on safety performance, regulatory mechanisms, operational excellence, and future expansion plans. India highlighted its continued commitment to strengthening nuclear safety and maintaining alignment with international best practices while pursuing large-scale growth in nuclear power generation capacity.

The delegation also engaged extensively with experts and representatives from participating nations on several contemporary nuclear safety issues. Indian experts actively contributed to discussions on country presentations, exchanging valuable insights on shared challenges, regulatory approaches, and emerging safety concerns within the global nuclear sector.

The review meeting concluded with plenary discussions that resulted in constructive outcomes aimed at further enhancing international cooperation and strengthening global nuclear safety frameworks.

India ratified the Convention on Nuclear Safety on March 31, 2005, reaffirming its commitment to upholding the highest standards of nuclear safety. The Convention is a legally binding international agreement that seeks to achieve and maintain a high level of nuclear safety worldwide by establishing robust safeguards against radiological hazards at nuclear installations.

The Convention also aims to protect individuals, society, and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation while ensuring effective prevention and mitigation of nuclear accidents.

Under the Convention, countries operating nuclear power plants are required to fulfil obligations based on the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Fundamental Safety Principles (SF-1). These include maintaining stringent standards in the siting, design, construction, and operation of nuclear facilities, while also enabling periodic peer reviews and comparison of regulatory practices with international benchmarks.

Mumbai-Pune Expressway Ghat Section to Get Bypass; ‘Missing Link’ Project to be Inaugurated on May 1

Deputy CM Eknath Shinde Reviews Work; Faster, Safer Travel with No Toll Hike

Mumbai, April 26:
The crucial Missing Link Project on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, which will make the route fully access-controlled, is now 99 percent complete and will be inaugurated on May 1 by Devendra Fadnavis. The project is expected to significantly reduce congestion in the ghat section, making travel faster, safer, and signal-free, thereby boosting the economy, said Eknath Shinde.

Deputy CM Shinde visited the project site and inspected the ongoing work. He said he personally reviewed the quality of construction and found it satisfactory. Remaining minor works will be completed in the coming days, and officials have been directed to ensure timely completion with high standards.

The 10.5-kilometre-long project includes two massive tunnels, elevated viaducts, and a 182-metre-high cable-stayed bridge over Tiger Valley. The tunnel, approximately 23.75 metres wide, is considered among the widest in the world.

Despite difficult terrain, heavy rainfall, and wind speeds of up to 70 kmph, the project has been successfully executed. The road will also pass 182 metres below the Lonavala Lake, making it a major engineering achievement completed by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation.

Once operational, the Missing Link will completely bypass the dangerous curves and traffic congestion in the ghat section, reducing travel time by 20 to 30 minutes. Shinde claimed that accidents in the ghat stretch would be reduced to nearly zero.

The project will shorten the Mumbai-Pune Expressway distance by around 6 kilometres. In the initial phase, light vehicles and buses will be given priority, helping ease traffic jams in the ghat region.

Clarifying concerns over toll hikes, Shinde stated that there will be no increase in toll charges due to the Missing Link Project. He also said no toll revision is currently proposed at the Khalapur toll plaza.

The ₹6,700 crore project was approved in 2019, when Devendra Fadnavis was Chief Minister. Its inauguration under his leadership now marks a special coincidence, Shinde noted.

He added that the Mumbai-Pune Expressway had already transformed sectors such as IT, services, industry, and real estate, and the Missing Link would further enhance its efficiency.

Tourist destinations like Lohagad Fort, Visapur Fort, and Karla Caves will also benefit from improved connectivity. The tunnels have been artistically designed with themes inspired by forts and caves of Maharashtra.

Shinde said infrastructure projects like these are not just roads but engines of economic growth. Strong connectivity boosts industries, services, IT sectors, and employment opportunities.

He further said the government is focusing on creating a network of access-controlled roads connecting projects such as Samruddhi Mahamarg, Konkan Coastal Road, and the Vasai-Virar Multimodal Corridor, aiming to enable travel across Maharashtra within 7 to 8 hours.

The Deputy CM expressed confidence that the Missing Link Project will make travel between Mumbai and Pune faster, safer, and more convenient, while accelerating the state's development.
