👑 Who was Saint Louis IX?

Saint Louis IX (1214–1270) was King of France and is remembered as a ruler who sought to place his faith and duty to God at the center of his life.

He was known for:

⚖️ Commitment to justice and honest judgment
❤️ Care for the poor and suffering

He died in 1270 during the Eighth Crusade and was canonized by Pope Boniface VIII in 1297.

O Saint Louis, faithful servant of God and righteous king,

Pray for us, that we may seek God's will above our own desires.

Teach us to lead our families with love,
to make decisions with wisdom,
to stand firmly for what is right,
and to serve those who are poor and in need.

Help us to remain faithful to Christ
in times of difficulty and temptation.

May our homes be filled with prayer,

Though not much is known for certain about Saint Lawrence, he has been highly revered as a martyr and deacon from at least the fourth century. Most of the legends come from the detailed writings of Saint Ambrose, who served as Bishop of Milan from 374 to 397, more than a century after Saint Lawrence’s death. His writings are likely more of an imagined telling of the story than a literal account. Another early source of Saint Lawrence’s life and martyrdom comes in the form of a Latin poem written by the Christian poet Prudentius, who lived c. 348–c. 405. Finally, the later Passio Sancti Laurentii gives other details about Saint Lawrence, which comes from an anonymous Spanish author who most likely did not write until the fifth or sixth century. From these three sources, as well as from the writings of others, such as Saint Augustine of Hippo and Pope Saint Gregory the Great, great reverence and devotion to Saint Lawrence have flourished throughout the centuries. He is even one of the few early martyrs named in Eucharistic Prayer I (the Roman Canon). It is for these reasons that today’s celebration holds the rank of Feast within our Church.

Prayer: Saint Lawrence, you gave your life to Christ at a young age and followed Him to your death with courage. You executed your duties to the poor with fidelity and saw them as the true treasures of the Church. Please pray for me, that I will have the courage that you had to say “Yes” to Christ, no matter what He asks of me. Saint Lawrence of Rome, pray for me. Jesus, I trust in You.

August 10 | Feast of Saint Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr

"The true treasure of the Church is found in the poor." ✝️

Today, the Catholic Church joyfully celebrates the Feast of Saint Lawrence, one of the Church's most beloved early martyrs. Though many details of his life come to us through sacred tradition, his witness of faith, charity, and courage has inspired Christians for over 1,700 years.

Saint Lawrence faithfully served the Church as a deacon in Rome, caring for the poor and safeguarding the Church's charitable works. When Roman authorities demanded that he surrender the Church's treasures, Lawrence gathered the poor, the sick, the widows, and the orphaned before them and declared:

"These are the treasures of the Church."

His fearless witness led to his martyrdom around A.D. 258, but his love for Christ continues to shine throughout the Church. His name is honored in the Roman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer I), a privilege shared by only a few early martyrs.

Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) ....

Edith Stein was the youngest of eleven children, eight of whom survived infancy. She was born in Breslau, Germany, the daughter of devout Jewish parents. After World War II, Breslau became part of Poland and is now named Wrocław. Edith’s father died when she was only two, so her mother raised her children as a widow but ensured that Edith received an excellent education. Although her mother was an observant Jew, Edith decided she was agnostic around the age of fourteen, breaking her mother’s heart. Edith’s decision was part of her deeper quest for truth. Edith attended the local university when she was nineteen and studied philosophy, psychology, history, and German. At the age of twenty-two, she traveled about 300 miles east to study philosophy at the University of Göttingen in Germany under the renowned professor and founder of Phenomenology, Edmund Husserl. Phenomenology is an intellectual method that seeks to offer a systematic, clear, and unbiased description of the world as it is experienced, rather than explaining it from a theoretical or abstract perspective, as is common in other philosophical approaches.

The Syro-Persian Church of the East is believed to have first reached China around the year 630 when two monks arrived to engage in silk trade. Although they were Christians, they followed the Nestorian heresy, which denied the divinity of Christ. The Chinese emperor welcomed them and permitted them to share their faith. Over the next two centuries, some Christian churches were erected and converts were made. However, by the mid-ninth century, Christians were being persecuted. In the year 987, an Arab writer from Baghdad wrote of a conversation he had with a monk who had traveled to China. The monk explained, “Christianity is extinct in China; the native Christians have perished in one way or another; the church which they had has been destroyed and there is only one Christian left in the land.”

Dominic was born in Caleruega, in the Kingdom of Castile, present-day Spain, to noble parents. He was likely named after Saint Dominic of Silos, a local saint from the previous century. An early biographer relates that his mother, struggling to conceive a child, made a pilgrimage to the monastery where Saint Dominic of Silos had been abbot. Around that time, she dreamt of a dog emerging from her womb that ran around carrying a torch, setting the world on fire. The name “Dominic” can be translated as “The Lord’s Dog.”

Saint Dominic was born around 1170 in Caleruega, in the Kingdom of Castile (modern-day Spain).
His parents were Felix de Guzmán and Blessed Joan (Juana) of Aza, members of the local nobility.
He later founded the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) and died in 1221.
✅ The Pilgrimage to Saint Dominic of Silos

According to early Dominican tradition:

Dominic's mother, Blessed Joan of Aza, longed for a child.
She made a pilgrimage to the monastery of Saint Dominic of Silos, asking for God's blessing.
After this, she conceived her son and named him Dominic in honor of the saint.

This tradition appears in medieval biographies but cannot be independently verified by modern historians.

✅ The Dream of the Dog with a Torch

This is one of the most famous legends about Saint Dominic.

According to early Dominican biographies:

Before Dominic was born, his mother dreamed that she gave birth to a dog carrying a flaming torch in its mouth.
The dog ran around the world setting it ablaze with light.

The dream was later interpreted to mean that Dominic would:

spread the light of the Gospel,
combat heresy,
enlighten the world through preaching.

This is not considered a historical event, but rather a symbolic vision preserved in Dominican tradition.

❓ Does "Dominic" Mean "The Lord's Dog"?

Not literally.

The name Dominic comes from the Latin Dominicus, meaning:

"Belonging to the Lord" or "Of the Lord."

The famous phrase:

Domini canes ("Dogs of the Lord")

is actually a Latin wordplay, not the origin of the name.

Dominicus = belonging to the Lord.
Domini canes = the Lord's dogs.

Dominicans embraced this pun because they saw themselves as faithful guardians and preachers of the Gospel.
