Adult with Autism

Autism is a balloon in a world full of pins. I make videos from my Autistic perspective to try to try to help people understand that it isn't the balloon that's the problem.

Autism is an individual difference for each person who is Autistic. But what happens when you are Autistic and not welcome by Autism communities because you won’t follow their agendas or ideologies?

You start your own channel.

All I want to do is share my perspective of my version of Autism openly and honestly, and in many cases...vulnerably. I don’t just share the fun, happy, shiny and friendly. I share the real, and the difficulties of being diagnosed later in life.

I wasn't going to release this and thought...'why not'. Hence the last minute post.

I recently watched a video from YT creator autisticnotalien about something called an 'Autism Reality Experience'. From all the research I can gather, you pay a company to come to you on a converted bus, and have an alternative sensory experience. It appears that nothing is aimed at a genuine lived experience unless it is solely focused on senses being affected.

Is this what non-autistic people assume autism is?

NEW VIDEO

Available 07 November, 18:00 GMT on YouTube, and Ad-Free on Patreon @AdultwithAutism

I read an article by a ‘leading’ neurologist who is not neurodiverse themselves, discussing neurodiverse people and why, apparently, the accommodations we may need are better not given.

Then I watched videos of the same neurologist, and it got worse. They ultimately suggest that the version of autism I am is not autism at all.

Basically, unless you can be heavily pathologised, it does not count.

But how can one person be so certain, yet so ignorant, as to never even consider our perspective? Their belief seems fixed: autism only exists when it is visibly severe or tied to significant impairment.

They completely neglect the difference in cognitive process experienced by the autistic people they refuse to recognise. To them, autism cannot be a difference; it must be a defect, a disorder, never a spectrum.

And that is exactly why voices like mine, and those of hundreds of thousands of autistic people who could actually offer insight, are so often ignored, while a non-autistic “expert” gets praised by their peers.

Do you see anything wrong with that?

I do. Hence the video.

As always, apologies for not being around. I unfortunately still haven't been adopted by a millionaire so must continue to work the day job!

I briefly mentioned the difference between recharging and relaxing as an autistic person in a past video, which resulted in several people asking if I would explain it further.

Recharging is not the same as relaxing, far from it, and it is important to know the difference should it be something that you may not have considered, yet could apply to you.

The topics you would think would be the easiest to cover are always the most difficult.

Of course, as always this is a video based solely off my point of view and perspective. I appreciate we are all wired differently, but it is important especially for later diagnosed adults to see why they may have a negative or less than positive starting point, upon said diagnosis.

This is another highly requested video, so I hope it comes across okay.

At the back end of last year, I was sent a short film related to Autism to watch. Of all the things sent, this was one I genuinely enjoyed and encourage anyone who hasn't seen it yet to watch it at least once.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C161T...

In November 2024 I spoke to Rick Stanton, who created the film as I wanted to learn more about it. I have finally found the space to talk to Steven Stanton who is Rick's brother and also plays the lead in the film.

Steve is on the spectrum, and I wanted to find out more about how the process felt, and whether it was enjoyable. It was also important to discuss as it shows a discrepancy in how we are told autistic people 'don't like change' and are 'inflexible of thought', yet Steve proved that when there are positives to focus on, it dispels that myth.

Y'Alright...

On the quest to make shorter content for those who find long-form videos a bit...well...long, I've decided to try out a few different things.

One idea is to answer autism-related questions from my perspective—questions submitted by you.

This will hopefully allow me to create more frequent content during periods when it’s near impossible to make full-length videos, help me see where curiosities lie with others in relation to autism, and promote a bit more interactivity. I’ve always said I want the channel to move in a direction that works for others—not just myself.

You can leave a question in the comments of this post, or if you'd prefer to keep things anonymous, you can email oldandautistic@gmail.com and I’ll keep an eye out through the rest of July to fish them out.

Whether your questions are positive, negative, controversial, alternative, or simply different...if I can offer a perspective, they’ll all be considered.

Keep Smiling.

I won't pretend this is 'groundbreaking', if anything, it is a free-style talk with no notes, just trying to figure out current feelings.

It is actually a very difficult topic to try and find the right thread on, so I just hope it is okay.
