You may have seen headlines over the last day or two about a possible plague case in Siberia, Russia.

A few people have already asked me about it, so I wanted to share some perspective before the headlines get ahead of the facts.

Here’s what we know right now:

A 28-year-old laboratory worker at an anti-plague research institute in Siberia recently became seriously ill with pneumonia and died. There have been reports that she may have contracted pneumonic plague, but that has NOT been confirmed.

Russian health authorities currently say they have found no plague cases among the people who had contact with her, and testing of those contacts has not identified dangerous infectious pathogens.

More importantly, there are currently no reported secondary cases and no evidence of sustained person-to-person transmission.

The World Health Organization is monitoring the situation and currently assesses the risk to the broader population as low, with the risk outside Russia considered very low.

Pneumonic plague is absolutely a serious disease, so this is worth watching. But plague is also a bacterial infection that can be treated with antibiotics when caught early, and what we are seeing right now is very different from an uncontrolled respiratory outbreak spreading through a population.

Could that assessment change if new information emerges? Of course.

If we begin seeing confirmed cases, secondary transmission, or cases appearing outside the immediate area, I'll pay very close attention and keep you updated.

But based on the information available right now, I don't see a reason to panic, rush out and buy equipment, or assume we're looking at the beginning of another pandemic.

Stay informed. Stay prepared. But don't let fear make decisions for you.
