Productivity is almost universally measured in numbers. How many widgets were produced? How many were sold? How much profit was earned? We usually measure productivity, even in our personal lives, in quantitative, objective terms. How much has our home gained in equity since we moved in? How many “A’s” did our children receive on their report cards? How many items did we cross off our “to do” list? This view of productivity is fine and good and helps us evaluate work performance and personal achievement. But the Bible defines productivity not only in terms of numbers but by our relationships and our character. Our productivity in these areas is not measured by large numbers or by perfect performance but by progress toward God’s purposes. When all is said and done, our productivity in these areas gives us the bottom line that really matters.

Luke 6:43-45 ~ For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. [44] For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. [45] A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

A piece of fruit can look good on the outside but be full of worms and rot on the inside. In the same way, we can look good on the outside but only pretend to love God and desire to serve him. Our “good deeds” can easily be motivated by desires for personal gain. The fruit God desires from us naturally rises from a heart that truly loves him. A good heart is essential for producing good deeds.
