Bioinformatics is moving fast.
🧵 You’re not behind in Bioinformatics. The field evolves faster than anyone can follow.

1️⃣ It’s not you.
Bioinformatics moves quickly. It’s not just about new algorithms, but the rapid pace at which technology evolves.

2️⃣
Back in 2012 At that time, ChIP-seq was the breakthrough, replacing ChIP-on-chip.
The field has been moving ever since.

3️⃣
First came ChIP-exo, then ATAC-seq, CUT&RUN, and CUT&Tag.
Each assay introduced its own unique analysis method. There’s no single pipeline for all.

4️⃣
Bulk RNA-seq was once the gold standard. We ran DESeq and edgeR like gospel.
But now?
Single-cell RNA-seq is everywhere. And spatial transcriptomics is on the rise.

5️⃣
Now, we have spatial transcriptomics and spatial proteomics.
Data isn’t just gene x sample anymore. It’s gene x cell x location x time.

6️⃣
Short reads used to dominate. Illumina was the king.
But now PacBio and Nanopore are catching up. Long-read sequencing is real—and it’s here.

7️⃣
Want to assemble a genome? Long reads are your best bet.
But they’re noisy. So you combine them with short reads for better accuracy. It’s a dance between the two.

8️⃣
There’s no way to be an expert in every assay.
ATAC-seq, CUT&RUN, Hi-C, WGS, WES, CITE-seq, spatial, single-nucleus, proteomics…
It’s impossible to know it all.

9️⃣
And the tools? They multiply like bacteria.
New preprints drop every week. New pipelines emerge monthly. New file formats constantly pop up.

🔟 How do you survive?
Focus on what doesn’t change:
• Curiosity
• Core programming skills
• Statistical reasoning
• Biological sanity checks

1️⃣1️⃣ Master the foundations, not just the latest wrapper.
Understand how PCA, normalization, and clustering work—not just which package runs them.

1️⃣2️⃣ You don’t need to know every assay, but you need to know how to ask:
• “What’s the structure of this data?”
• “What’s noise vs. signal?”

1️⃣3️⃣ Most importantly find mentors who’ve been through it.
Senior bioinformaticians, wet-lab biologists learn from their experience.

1️⃣4️⃣ Watch them spot artifacts in an IGV track.
See how they scan a QC report and know what to ignore. That’s golden advice.
