Starfire: An Investigation into the Construction of a Modern Occult Tradition

The difficulty with investigating Starfire is that almost everybody begins too late, or they are too lazy to research the origins. That, and not comprehending some fairly obvious physical impossibilities. They begin with Nicholas de Vere, Laurence Gardner, Aleister Crowley or Kenneth Grant and then travel backwards, searching the ancient world for fragments resembling what those writers eventually described. Once that method is adopted, almost anything can be made to fit. A fertility goddess becomes a priestess of Starfire; a plant associated with conception becomes an endocrine substance; sacred marriage becomes sexual magic; a chalice becomes the Grail; serpent imagery becomes kundalini; alchemy becomes monatomic gold. Eventually an apparently coherent doctrine stretches from ancient Sumer to the twentieth century.

The correct investigation proceeds in the opposite direction. Before doing that, however, I should probably acknowledge that Starfire has always been my Voldemort conversation: the subject I have spent years trying not to discuss. It is, quite frankly, a weird perversion that only fantasists seem to grapple onto. There are far better spiritual practices associated with enlightenment that do not involve turning ancient fertility traditions into the Kama Sutra with ceremonial extras. From practically every system of transcendental knowledge I have encountered, the idea of reaching a higher state while becoming completely fixated upon literal sexual mechanics appears somewhat contradictory.

You would not believe the questions people have brought to me. One woman once worried that her partner might somehow have performed it accidentally. I will not name her, but I still find the question hilarious. Accidentally? 🤣 None of this is done accidentally. A supposedly elaborate initiation involving intention, preparation and ceremonial language is rather difficult to stumble into by mistake. Quite often, just for a joke, I ask, “Oh wow, can you speak Latin fluently as well?” because presumably, if ceremonial language and intention are involved, you would need to know what you were actually saying. There is also a fairly spectacular biological contradiction in versions that simultaneously invoke a “prepubescent” participant and menstruation. Menstruation begins as part of puberty. You cannot be genuinely prepubescent and already menstruating in the ordinary physiological sense. 🤣 I should probably stop there, but it genuinely makes me laugh at the level of stupid I have heard in emails and messages.

Some people have taken the words in these books so seriously that they have turned an occult theory into a personal bedroom crisis, leaving me with mental images I never asked for. EWE 🤢 Others have approached me convinced that they possess some mysterious biological quality capable of spiritually enlightening another person. Older women have fantasised about younger men; men have produced equivalent theories about women. Somewhere between occult literature and imagination, a historical claim has become a personal fantasy. I have generally been kind, redirected people towards other spiritual ideas and then laughed about some of the conversations privately with friends. That is being nice. We have blatantly taken the piss out of them. 🤣

For years I regarded the whole subject almost as a social experiment in credulity. Take a taboo subject, surround it with Satanic language, sprinkle ancient gods and secret bloodlines over it, add enough scientific terminology to make it sound technical, then see how many people repeat it without checking where any of it came from. Now that the subject is circulating increasingly online, avoidance is no longer particularly useful. So let us strip back the BS in the great Abbe fashion many have come to enjoy. What actually happened? What did the ancient sources describe? Which places existed? Which names belong to entirely different cultures? When did the terminology appear? And who were the naughty sensationalist successive occult writers adding ingredients to the cauldron of ploppy slop? Most importantly, how much of what is now presented as an ancient rite is actually modern?

This video looks at copyright, fair use, plagiarism, attribution and provenance in relation to the work of Nicholas de Vere.

For years, material associated with Nicholas de Vere and the Royal Dragon Court has been repeated, reinterpreted and republished by other writers. One of the reasons I published The Sechnaill Kings: The Original Provenance Manuscript 1995 was to establish a clear documentary record showing what Nicholas de Vere was writing, when he was writing it, and what material existed before later authors published their own versions of these ideas.

That provenance matters.

I have previously raised serious concerns about the way Nicholas de Vere’s research appeared in the work of Laurence Gardner. I am now examining Gary Wayne’s Genesis 6 Conspiracy books and asking similar questions about sourcing, attribution and the extent to which earlier material has been incorporated into later publications.

This is a critical review and commentary examining published works, citations, chronology and documentary evidence. I will be showing the sources so viewers can see the material and make their own assessment.

Copyright does not prevent legitimate criticism, review or discussion of a published work. But fair use/fair dealing is not the same thing as taking somebody else’s original research and presenting it without appropriate attribution. That distinction is exactly what this series is about.

Why did I publish The Sechnaill Kings?

Because provenance matters. Dates matter. Original manuscripts matter. And when several generations of authors are working from substantially the same material, establishing where that material originated becomes extremely important.

Today I visited the archaeological excavation at Preston Down Road in Paignton, where evidence of an Iron Age settlement and later Roman occupation is being uncovered ahead of a new housing development.

The video begins with the excavation trenches and the defensive enclosure ditches that once helped protect the settlement. From its elevated position, the inhabitants would have had extensive views across the surrounding landscape and towards the sea.

I then filmed a university archaeology student carefully sweeping one of the trenches. During that moment, several pottery fragments emerged from the soil, including a piece of Dorset Black-Burnished Ware that I was able to see and hold immediately after it was discovered.

The video also explores the remains of a kiln or oven-like feature, glass fragments, evidence of metalworking, a striking herringbone stone wall, Roman coins, Iron Age and Roman pottery, replica tools and weapons, and the different ways archaeologists date pottery through its fabric, shape and decoration.

I also discuss the wider archaeology of south Devon, including the major Iron Age and Romano-British settlement at Ipplepen, which has helped transform our understanding of Roman activity in the region.

For me, this was more than an open day. It was my first experience of watching history emerge directly from the earth.

The past becomes the present.
