🚨‼️The gag Fortunato and Gardeur use 🐴

This is the same gag we use with both horses. It has a double twisted-wire mouthpiece with sweet iron and copper, along with a gag action that makes it work differently from a traditional snaffle.

When I take contact with the reins, the bit can move slightly upward, increasing pressure around the corners of the mouth and also creating pressure through the poll. This can help the horse lift the front end, become lighter, and respond better to half-halts, which can be especially useful when jumping.

That doesn’t mean I need to use a lot of force. Quite the opposite—with this type of bit, small aids and soft hands are very important.

What’s interesting is that Gardeur recently went back to this bit after trying many different options, and he has felt amazing in it again. We really did try many different bits with him, over and over, before coming back to this one. Sometimes you explore different options and eventually return to what truly works best for that horse and rider.

And I want to clarify something because it really bothers me when people assume that I don’t care about what I put in a horse’s mouth. I absolutely do. I care a lot, and every decision we make is carefully considered.

As for Fortunato, he is not my horse, and I don’t make decisions about his equipment or management. He is also an incredibly strong horse. I honestly wish some people could ride him themselves and experience why his team has chosen to use this type of bit with him.

There is so much more behind a bit than what you can see in a picture. There is the horse, the rider, the trainer, lots of trial and error, and a reason behind the choices being made.

Every horse is different, and a bit that works for Fortunato and Gardeur may not be the right choice for another horse. 🤍🐴

I posted 3 shorts from today’s rides! 🐴🤍

The flying changes were definitely my favorite. They came out SO good with Gardeur, which makes me really happy because they’re something we’ve always struggled with and haven’t been very consistent at. So this feels like a big step forward for us! 🥹✨

I also worked and rode all 3 horses by myself today since my trainers weren’t here. I probably made a few mistakes along the way, but I’m really proud of how everything went and of what we accomplished today. 🤍🐴
