Kumase Tafo Stool History

Tafo town is situated within Kumase metropolis. The town is about two miles away from the centre of Kumase and lie on the Kumase Mampon road.
The Tafo is called PONKO & SAFO STOOL. It belongs to the AGONA clan. The chief of Tafo is the head of Benkum division of Kumase traditional area.
Tafohene has all the trappings of an omanhene. He is permitted by customs to ride on palanquine during ceremonial occasions like Adae festival and Durbars. When the king sit in state with the Amanhene, Tafohene also has the right os access to the use of Golden Sandals and to shake hands as well with the King.
According to history, the Tafo Agona clan members were among the Akwamu people who left Akwamu following the death of King Ansa Sasraku 1st of Akwamu when civil war was threatening to destroy the kingdom. The fact of the case was that King Ansa Sasraku I nominated one of his nephews, a senior twin brother to succeed him but when he passed on, the queenmother Nana Nkansa and many of the royals nominated the junior twin brother, Obiri Yeboa to the throne. This act nearly resulted in a civil war, and to avoid it the queen mother Nana Nkansa and her group left Akwamu. They wandered in the forest with their chief, Nana Obiri Yeboa until they came to settle at Asantemanso. Among the settlers were Nana Ponko BaafoÉ”, his sister, obiyaa Atakora and her daughter Akoma Adoma. When the Asantemanso settlement collapsed because of civil war, Nana Ponko BaafoÉ” and his group left Asantemanso and founded a place of their own near Kokofu and named the town Mmuoso. Later, not satisfied with the condition there, they moved away from Mmuoso to Adwumam.
It was Adwumam that an elder of Aduana clan and his people came to join them and built their village next to them. The Aduana elder and his people moved away and settled at Suntreso. He persuaded Nana Ponko BaafoÉ” to follow them to Suntreso. However, Nana Ponko BaafoÉ” and his people rather moved to a nearby place, settled there and named the place Korobo. Korobo is presently the area where the Tafohene house is situated and now known as Dr Mensa, as well as Adehyeman Gardens. The settlement at the site took place when Nana Kobia Amamfi was the chief of Kwaman now Kumase. Nana Oti Akenten and his group settled at the area near Barclays Bank on the Prempeh ll street @ Adum.
The women of Nana Ponko BaafoÉ” group were mostly potters. One day when the children were looking for clay, they discovered a stream called Santan so they followed the course of the stream and found out that it was clay bearing. They reported it to the women and they also followed to find out the truth. When they were satisfied, they decided to found a new village there which they named Tafo after their hometown at Akwamu. The new village was on the Kumase - Mampon road.
Going round their new settlement, they found another settlement nearby called Obuokrom which was ruled by a woman chief called Afumene. They made friends with her and her people. When Afumene passed on, her daughter called Afidaa succeeded her.
Ponko BaafoÉ” was succeeded by Tua Amoa Antwi who had a peaceful reign. Tua Amoa Antwi was succeed by Frimpon Nyia. It was during the reign of Frimpon Nyia that trouble started to show up. Some Oyoko clan people had also settled at Korobo. Their leader who was called Nyankomedurii had the ambition to rule Korobo and Tafo.
Sure of his prowess, he provoked the Tafohene into a combat. They fought with swords and shields, with their followers behind them shouting and praying. The Tafohene was wounded and according to the rules, defeated. Nyankomedurii, also known as Esene Agyinamoa Mpatu, who was an elder of Oti Akenten, was victorious therefore the Tafohene had to swear an oath of allegiance to him. Nana Oti Akenten of Kwaman passed away and Obiri Yeboa was enstooled as the chief of Kwaman. Another war broke out between the Tafo people and the Kwaman people. The cause of the conflict was the squabble between a royal of Obiri Yeboa and an heir toTafo stool when they were playing a game locally called "NtÉ›". The game was played with the seeds to which they each gave the name of their respective Chief. When Obiri Yeboa was defeated, the heir to the Tafo stool threw the seed to the ground and trampled on it with his foot.
The Kwaman royal wanted to take the Tafo royal to Kwaman to be punished but the Tafo royal run away. This resulted in a fight between the Tafo people and the Kwaman people. The fight took place near the subin stream. The Tafo people were defeated. The Tafohene who succeeded Nana Frimpon Nyia was Nana Safo Agyeman Akoto. He ruled Tafo during the reign of Obiri Yeboa of Kwaman. It was during the reign of this chief that the people of Agogo, Kumawu and Kwaman fought the powerful King called Ataala Afram who ruled the territory between River Afram and the volta. The territory extended to Anum and Boso by the Senchi Ferry across the volta. The capital of his kingdom was called Kokofu, near Atebubu.
The people of Agogo, Kumawu and Kwaman also settled around the area and any hunter of the three states who ventured to enter Ataala Afram territory was captured and killed.
Shrouded in secrecy, as a result of this menace, the three states came together to fight Ataala Afram and his people. The three states also sought help from the neighbours around including Obiri Obiri Yeboa's Kwaman people. Nana Safo Akoto and his Tafo people went in to help the three states. The allied forces drove Ataala Afram and other northern forces who came to help away. After the war, Tafohene was given the Ntahra of Guan Chief and Fontomfrom drums.
To be continued. ........
The history was narrated by Barima kogyeasuo Akwasi ll Kokofuhene
