Why OAU cancelled Peter Obi’s lecture – Management

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has explained why it cancelled a proposed lecture by former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, saying the organisers failed to give adequate notice.

According to the university, details of the event and Obi’s participation were only officially communicated on Friday, less than 24 hours before the scheduled programme on Saturday morning.

It said this short notice made it impossible to complete necessary arrangements.

The institution noted that events involving high-profile guests require proper planning, especially coordination with security agencies such as the police and the Department of State Services, to ensure safety and order.

Obi had earlier said he was scheduled to deliver a keynote lecture at the university before travelling to Ibadan for an opposition leaders’ summit.

After the cancellation, he described the situation as part of a worrying pattern affecting similar engagements.

However, the university’s spokesperson, Abiodun Olarewaju, insisted that the decision was based strictly on procedure and not on any political or personal considerations.

He added that approval for the use of Oduduwa Hall was denied because the required protocols for hosting such a major event were not followed in time.

Dangote refinery to begin crude oil production

The Dangote Group says it has achieved its first oil from its upstream assets and is preparing to begin marketable crude production in the coming weeks.

In an interview with Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, Devakumar Edwin, the vice-president of the Dangote Group, said early testing has commenced on crude from its Niger Delta licences.

According to Edwin, the company has already begun standard well testing and is preparing to scale up output.

“We have opened a well and begun standard testing, which should be completed in the next three to four weeks maximum,” he said.

“After that point, oil can start to be pumped in larger volumes, and the company can begin work on drilling new wells.”

Also speaking, David Bird, the chief executive officer (CEO) of the Dangote refinery, said the upstream assets could provide a more stable crude supply for the refinery.

“Alongside its upstream interests, the company is seeking to establish its own shipping presence to help reduce logistics costs and improve the reliability of its crude sourcing,” Bird said.

“Combined with WAEP’s indigenous production, Dangote-owned vessels could offer the refinery a fully integrated and attractive source of stable crude supply.”

He said the refinery will take delivery of the crude “if it makes sense”, noting that the company’s joint venture partners will be eager to realise maximum value for the barrels produced.

“Dangote has interests in upstream, we will continue to grow that, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it won’t be arm's length at every phase,” he said.

The Dangote refinery and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) did not respond to enquiries on the development as of the time of filing this report.

Crude oil production could help close supply gaps, a major challenge that threatened the refinery’s operations when it came on stream.

On April 1, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited said it would allocate seven cargoes in May to Dangote refinery, an increase from the five allocated in previous months.

UK jails Nigerian couple over £433,000 tax fraud using stolen data

A Nigerian couple, Luciana and Femi Akanbi, have been sentenced to three years and nine months in prison in the United Kingdom for orchestrating a large-scale tax fraud that siphoned over £433,000 from public funds using stolen personal data.

According to a report by KentLive, the sentencing was delivered at Woolwich Crown Court, where prosecutors detailed how the couple exploited sensitive employee information from Transport for London to defraud HM Revenue and Customs through false tax rebate claims.

The fraud, carried out between September 2021 and January 2022, resulted in losses exceeding £433,000 to public funds, although the total value of fraudulent claims submitted was close to £650,000.

What they are saying

Delivering judgment, Judge David Miller described the case as the most severe data breach in the history of Transport for London, noting the wide-ranging impact on staff and institutional systems.

“It affected their morale, I am told, and staff performance. You acquired and used the personal details of 40 employees… There were 139 claims for tax rebates totalling just under £649,000.”
He added that the fraud caused “immense damage to third parties,” particularly employees whose financial records and credit ratings were affected.

The court heard that Luciana Akanbi, who worked in TfL’s human resources department, accessed the personal data of 107 employees, which was then used to file 139 fraudulent claims using multiple devices.

Judge Miller emphasised that the crime was only possible due to her position of trust within the organisation.

“You… had been colleagues with some of these people who were extremely badly let down,” he said.
Evidence also revealed that the stolen funds were quickly dispersed through a complex money laundering network, with more than £50,000 reportedly funneled into gambling accounts.

The judge noted that financial pressure, including Femi Akanbi’s gambling issues following illness during the COVID-19 pandemic, contributed to the crime.

What you should know

The case adds to a growing list of fraud-related prosecutions involving Nigerian nationals abroad.

In September last year, Farouk Adekunle Adepoju was arrested in the UK following a U.S. extradition request over alleged wire and computer fraud totaling more than $235,000.

In February 2026, Matthew Akande was sentenced to eight years in prison and ordered to pay $1.39 million in restitution for his role in a U.S. tax fraud scheme.

Similarly, Afeez Olatunji Adewale was extradited from Nigeria in February 2026 over sexual extortion and related financial crimes in Pennsylvania.

In August 2025, Chukwuemeka Victor Amachukwu was extradited from France for alleged tax fraud, hacking, and wire fraud targeting U.S. authorities.

How Elon Musk’s APC tweet triggered debate in Nigeria

A tweet by tech billionaire Elon Musk has sparked a wave of reactions among Nigerian social media users after many misinterpreted his reference to “APC.”

Musk, the CEO of Tesla, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday to describe his futuristic vehicle, the Tesla Cybertruck, saying, “Cybertruck is an APC from the future.”

The post quickly gained traction globally, but it triggered a particularly intense response from some Nigerians, who widely know “APC” as the acronym for the ruling All Progressives Congress, which produced President Bola Tinubu.

Many users flooded the comment section, mistakenly assuming Musk was referring to Nigeria’s political party rather than the military term Armoured Personnel Carrier, which the Cybertruck’s design is often compared to.

Some replies reflected confusion and curiosity. One user who identifies as Daily Pulse asked directly, “Which APC are you referring to, sir?”

Another user who identifies as First Principles said, “You might want to skip that abbreviation, Elon. In Nigeria, “APC” represents a political party that has brought years of hardship, insecurity, and hunger to millions. It’s a trigger for a lot of pain here.”

“Please find a synonym for the word APC because APC is the greatest nightmare in Nigeria, don’t let Nigerians start boycotting Tesla (sic),” one user identified as Dhamilarey said.

“My heart first drop go my belle. Elon, please don’t give me a jump scare like this again (sic),” one Prom Prom wrote.

Experts advocate robust regulations to improve waste disposal
One Aanuoluwapo Sukoto opined, “As a Nigerian, seeing ‘APC from the future’ hit different. But this Cybertruck sounds like the real armored beast we need, indestructible, all-terrain luxury that vibes through rainbows and tough roads. The future is here, and Nigeria is ready for it!”

Another netizen, Parable wrote, “Please write that APC in full abeg, before this guys will use it and run agenda.”

“Anything APC gives us PTSD in Nigeria. We have been traumatized by that acronym,” one Tamunotonye tweeted.

While others leaned into humour and satire, a commenter joked about Nigerian politics, suggesting the tweet was somehow linked to local political figures, while another sarcastically implied Musk had taken sides in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Meanwhile, some users understood the tweets and tried to educate others who thought the tweets were probably influenced by the President’s kin.

A user, Dr Ose Etoobhio, said, “Dear Nigerians, I am fun at parties. APC means Armoured Personnel Carrier… like those armoured tanks!”

In his remark, internet sensation Daniel Regha said, “APC, meaning it takes the design and partial functionality of a military armored vehicle. It’s almost like a replica, but not quite, I presume.”

In Nigeria, "Jik" was not just a product. It was a verb. And they still lost the streets

If you told a child in the 90s or early 2000s to go and buy bleach, you said, "Go and buy Jik."

Even if they brought back another brand, it was still called Jik.

They had an absolute monopoly, global backing from Reckitt Benckiser, and a brand name that was embedded in the Nigerian vocabulary.

They felt untouchable.

Then, Tolaram Group (the same mastermind company behind Indomie) launched Hypo.

Hypo did not try to convince Nigerians that their bleach was scientifically superior to Jik. Instead, they destroyed Jik using a strategy called Micro-Contextual Distribution.

Here is the "Real Thing" that happened:

Jik viewed bleach as a "Monthly Shopping" item.

You went to a big supermarket, bought a large plastic bottle for a heavy price, and kept it in your bathroom for a month. Jik was an investment.

Hypo looked at the reality of the Nigerian streets and realized something different. People did not just wash clothes once a month.

A student needs to wash one white shirt for Monday morning. A mechanic needs to wash his uniform. They do not have the money for a big bottle of Jik, and they do not need that much bleach anyway.

So, Hypo put bleach in a cheap nylon sachet.

But they did not stop there.

They knew Jik dominated the big supermarkets, so Hypo completely bypassed them.

Leveraging the terrifying distribution network they already built for Indomie, they put Hypo sachets in every single neighborhood kiosk, motor park, and street corner.

They turned bleach from a planned monthly investment into a cheap, daily impulse buy.

Jik had the big grammar and the brand prestige. Hypo had the streets.

By the time Jik swallowed their pride and tried to release their own sachets, it was too late. Hypo had already become the new king of the wash basin.

Why am I telling you this?

Many of you rely too heavily on "Brand Awareness."

You run a business, an agency, or a service, and you think because everybody knows your name, you are safe.

You think because you have been in the market for 10 years, the new guys cannot touch you.

The Hypo Disruption teaches us a hard truth: Brand popularity will not save you if your product is rigid.

You can be the most famous consultant or the most recognized brand in your industry, but if a hungry competitor makes their service cheaper to access, easier to consume, and closer to the customer, they will steal your entire market share.

Convenience will defeat legacy every single time.

I hope you learned something.

EFCC busts alleged ‘yahoo academy’ in Abuja, arrests 31 suspects

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has busted an alleged ‘Yahoo academy’ in Abuja, arresting 31 suspected internet fraudsters.

The agency disclosed this in a statement shared via its official X account. According to the EFCC, the suspects, made up of two alleged ringleaders and several trainees, were apprehended while receiving training in internet fraud.

The commission said it recovered several items during the operation, including mobile phones, 18 laptops, and other electronic gadgets.

The EFCC said the operation was carried out on Thursday, April 9, 2026, adding that some of the trainees were reportedly lured from Benue State under false pretences.

“Investigation by the EFCC revealed that some of the interns were lured all the way from Benue State by the academy proprietors with the promise of job offers, but upon settling down at the facility, were handed communication devices, computers and software, setting the stage for their training in cyber fraud,” the statement reads in part.
The commission added that the recruits were confined within the facility, with strict movement restrictions and their phones seized to prevent communication with the outside world.

“To enforce compliance and dedication, the proprietors house the recruits in the academy and restrict their movements strictly within the perimeters of the facility and forcibly take possession of their mobile phones, thus totally cutting them off from the outside world,” it added.

It further disclosed that erring trainees were subjected to physical punishment, noting that the suspects would be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Internet fraud, commonly referred to as ‘Yahoo Yahoo’ in Nigeria, involves using digital platforms to deceive victims, often through phishing emails, fake identities, romance scams, or fraudulent investment schemes, to obtain money or sensitive information.

Reports have consistently ranked Nigeria among countries with a high prevalence of internet fraud, even as the country also struggles with relatively low levels of cybersecurity protection, making it vulnerable to such crimes.

Amid rising cases, the EFCC in September 2025 blamed individuals involved in internet fraud and money laundering for stricter visa conditions imposed on Nigerians by foreign countries, citing reputational damage caused by such activities.

What you should know

The latest arrest adds to a string of crackdowns by the EFCC targeting cybercrime networks across the country.

In May 2025, the commission arrested 120 suspected internet fraudsters in Lagos during a major operation aimed at dismantling online fraud syndicates. Authorities seized items, including 26 luxury vehicles and numerous smartphones.

In a separate operation in Abuja, the EFCC apprehended 105 suspects, comprising 101 Nigerians and four foreign nationals, for their alleged involvement in internet fraud schemes, including fake hotel review job scams that targeted victims abroad.

The agency also arrested 28 suspected Ponzi scheme operators in Minna, Niger State, accusing them of enticing investors with unrealistic returns and collecting fees under false pretences, with plans to arraign them in court.

In 2014, Sir Kessington Adebukunla Adebutu, known as Baba Ijebu, took a risky bet and gamble

As a known risk-taker, he had previously started Nigeria's first betting franchise, Premier Lotto, known as Baba Ijebu.
However, this time the scenario was different.

Wema Bank was in distress and was a loss-making regional bank.
Many investors saw a badly run, struggling, distressed bank with a bleak future and stayed away, but Baba Ijebu saw an opportunity.

He saw a badly run bank that could do better if properly managed.

He acquired 29% of the bank's shares at a giveaway price and later bought an additional 32.8% in his daughter Abolanle Matel-Okoh's name, consolidating his hold and grip on the bank.

He started acquiring shares of Wema bank, bit by bit from that 2014 until late 2019 when he finally took over.

This move made him the principal highest shareholder of Wema bank.

After taking over the bank, Baba Ijebu hired astute management team led by Managing Director of the bank, Moruf Oseni to change the fortunes of the bank, started and founded by late Doyin Okupe’s dad.

It was a risky gamble, but 12 years later, it has paid off.
Wema Bank has been revived and is no longer a struggling bank. It is now a national bank with more than 1 trillion naira in valuation.

Remember it was a regional Yoruba bank when Baba Ijebu took over the reins of the bank in 2014.

Baba Ijebu's patience and measured investment have paid off, and his fortunes have soared with the bank's.

His initial modest investment in 2014 is now worth N314.63 billion as of today highlighting one of the biggest individual bank holdings in Nigeria.

But it is more than this.

Wema Bank had a good year in 2025, with a 116.3% rise in profit before tax to N222.07 billion.

Wema's 2025 full-year performance is the strongest in the bank's history by every major measure. Profit before tax rose 116.3% to N222.07 billion from N102.52 billion in 2024. Profit after tax surged 124% to N193.19 billion from N86.28 billion, a result the bank noted surpassed its entire five-year cumulative profit figure on its own.

Wema's digital banking platform, ALAT, Africa's first fully digital bank, has been a key driver of the lender's deposit mobilisation and customer acquisition strategy. Over 98% of transactions now take place outside branches, a figure the bank has used to drive down its cost-to-income ratio and redirect savings into lending growth.

Baba Ijebu will receive N14.84 billion in gross dividends from Wema Bank.

The N14.84 billion gross dividend is the largest single dividend payment Adebutu has received from Wema bank in his history as the bank's principal shareholder

And it did not stop here.

His daughter Abolanle Matel-Okoh, a non-executive director, holds a separate stake that will generate its own dividend income.

At N314.63 billion, Adebutu's Wema stake is now larger than the total market capitalisation of several Nigerian banks listed on the exchange, a measure of both how far the bank has come and how substantially the Premier Lotto founder's financial footprint has expanded beyond the gaming industry that made him.
