10 interesting SOLAR facts about the SOLAR ECLIPSE!

There’s a partial eclipse hitting Britain on 12 August — and here’s what I think is actually worth knowing if you’re into solar like I am:

1. Up to 96% of the sun gets covered — deepest eclipse we’ve had since 1999. Cornwall and the south-west get the best of it, around 95% coverage.
2. It’s happening early evening, roughly from 6pm, so the sun’s already low in the sky.
3. National Grid reckon we could lose up to 1.3GW of solar generation while this is going on. That’s a genuinely big number for a couple of hours.
4. Worth remembering solar was providing 14.4% of Britain’s electricity just last month — so this isn’t some negligible dip, it’s a real chunk of the mix.
5. The bit that actually matters to grid engineers isn’t the total energy lost, it’s the speed of the drop. We’re talking output swinging by over 4,000MW an hour as the moon moves across. That’s the tricky part to manage.
6. Zoom out to Europe and it’s nearly 10GW disappearing across the continent, with Germany and Spain hit hardest since that’s where the big solar farms are.
7. This isn’t unheard of either — back in 2015 UK solar output dropped by around 75% during that eclipse, and the grid handled it fine.
8. Cloud cover will actually decide how dramatic this all looks in the numbers — clearer skies mean a bigger, more obvious dip in generation.
9. And this is honestly one of the best adverts for battery storage you’ll see all year. While National Grid leans on gas plants to fill the gap nationally, anyone with a home battery is doing the exact same job — banking sun before the dip, topping back up after or even exporting to the grid to help when needed.
10. If you’ve got panels and a battery, genuinely check your app tomorrow evening. You’ll watch the eclipse happen in your own generation graph before you even look up at the sky.

So, what does everyone make of the new Intelligent Octopus Go changes? As clear as mud!?

My understanding is you will get a maximum of 6 hours for car charging at cheap rate, but potentially up to 12 hours for home usage, depending on when your car charging slot falls. If your charging slot falls in the normal cheap rate times, then you will only get 6 hours at the cheap rate for home and EV.

What are your thoughts on the changes?

Very sad to hear of the passing of Quentin Willson. A real positive advocate for EVs and clean tech. Grew up watching him on Top Gear and met him at Fully Charged last year and he took a genuine interest in my two daughters and their futures. RIP! ☹️
