Biblical typology is a literary method in which a New Testament figure, event, or object is seen to be a representation or “type” of a Old Testament figure, event, or object. Generally, this means that the New Testament event presented is understood to fulfill or complete what was begun in the Old Testament. Many theologians agree that this literary technique is an intentional device used by the authors of Scripture to convey deeper spiritual truths.

To understand how biblical typology works, imagine that certain aspects of the Old Testament (OT) are seen to “prefigure” or predict what is presented in the New Testament (NT). This means that when a OT figure, event, or object is seen to “prefigure” something in the NT, the OT act is actually a type or foreshadowing of the NT fulfillment. For example, Abraham’s offering of his son Isaac in the OT (see Genesis 22) is seen to type or prefigure Christ’s offering of His own life in the NT (see John 3:16).
