So I watched talking about filler in SMG4
I’m not gonna go over the video itself for privacy reasons, but the video made me think…
What makes an SMG4 episode filler, and does it being filler make it any worse?
Obviously not every episode that isn’t arc related is filler, that’s stupid. But, when I think of filler in SMG4, I point to episodes that aren’t supposed to be arc related, like the road trip video.
So I think what makes an SMG4 episode filler is if either
A: The episode doesn’t serve any other purpose aside from completing one plot point, and not putting much thought on the rest of the episode
(If this doesn’t make sense, basically, most chaotic episodes exist cause there’s a silly concept the writers want to tell, for it to be filler, it has to only exist to accomplish a certain goal, and in the process, not really putting much of the care towards the actual plot.)
Or
B: If there is a non arc related video right in the middle of a progressing story arc
(Basically, think of when the Genesis arc was happening, and while they were having this deep interconnected story, there were episodes that didn’t really add much and didn’t have much reason for existing in the middle of the arc)
Now, an episode being filler doesn’t immediately make it bad, it just really depends how they execute it. The road trip video was basically filler based on the ending, but uhh, yeah I’m gonna save the insanity I have for watching that garbage for my Worst and Best video…
But what do y’all think
In y’all’s opinion, what makes an SMG4 episode filler, and does it being filler make it any worse?

Meggy is an….. interesting character
During the time she appeared in SMG4, from when she was introduced in 2017 to when SMG4 ended, the community has had extremely mixed opinions from fans (Steven Universe opinion type). Shes been called a good character, badly written, the best SMG4 character, worst character ever in fiction, mid, she’s gotten mysoginistic comments from insane people (Thanks Metal Blade, you ruined a community). So, what is my opinion on her character? I think that, despite some issues I have with her character and her writing, I like Meggy.
Now, I will admit, back then I wasn’t a fan of her character because of some frankly awful writing they had for her character from like 2021 to 2023, which that still hasn’t changed, there are so many writing issues. Looking back now, overall, I’ve softened up a little.
Now, when talking about Meggy, obviously, there are still glaring issues with how they wrote her, and authors issues are so prevalent that they are hard to ignore. I hate how the show characterized her as a character who always thought she was in the right, that was just stupid. A lot of what I think are some of the worst SMG4 episodes are bad because of that very thing. Meggy thinking what she’s siding is right and the plot not acknowledging her flaws for a while was just extremely annoying, and her extremely mad straight man attitude is just not fun to watch. That’s not even mentioning her taking part in the bulshittery that was her and Mario’s sibling relationship. Plus, after Meggy’s Destiny and before 2025, she wasn’t not developed enough and it felt like the writers didn’t know what to do with her character, especially in Western Spaghetti and the Western arc in general.
Now, all of that is bad, and those are still things that I can criticize about her character. However, with all of that, there are still many good qualities with Meggy. Now I’m not one of those “Oh, Inkling Meggy was better than human Meggy” people, and I hate how part of that community stems from the worst SMG4 rant of all time (2nd Metal Blade joke). However, I still really enjoyed her when she was an inkling and thought that she was a very solid character. And honestly, I was absolutely a fan of her character arc during Meggy’s Destiny, and I still think her character in that movie was one of the movies best qualities. Plus, though I was on the fence with her character during 2024, she was surprisingly a great character during 2025. Not only do we actually see them acknowledge her flaws in a neutral way that doesn’t feel forced, but they make her a likable character that I actually cared about. Especially in Race of All Time, I loved her character there and how she helps Katie with their struggles, with one of my favorite speeches from the series. Her character during Guns N Puzzles was extremely solid and a massive improvement from her character during the Western Arc. And also, I’m gonna be honest, though I still have my issues with her character through all of the series, the series also succeeded with making me actually care about what she goes through, cause also holy shit has this woman gone through a lot.
Overall, I still have issues with Meggy as a character and you can’t deny that she was one of the worst written characters during 2022-2023. However, despite that, I still like her, she isn’t a perfect character in any way, but I still like her.
(Also both of her voice actors are really talented and voiced her well, just wanted to mention that real quick)

So I recently rewatched the Revelations movie
I’m not gonna mention many specific things because I want to save it for the worst and best list I’m making with SMG4 (Spoiler alert, it’s in the best tier, wow shocking). But I do want to mention one thing, being the community’s response to the movie
This is a well written movie, that ends of a saga, concludes characters stories, and is a huge part to the overall SMG4 lore… and people responded by saying it was “too boring”. Yeah, if you can’t tell, I’m not the biggest fan of how the SMG4 fandom treated this movie. First off, to those people that said it was “too boring”, did we watch the same movie? Many things happen in the movie in a pretty structured way, there is plenty of awesome moments, and there isn’t really any consistent things that I can say are boring. I’m pretty sure the only reason people said it was boring is because they can’t keep up with lore, and reminder that this is from the same people who say Western Spaghetti is the best SMG4 movie of all time, Y’now, another movie with lore that ended up building towards the Puzzlevision movie and everything afterwards. Y’all kept up with everything in the Genesis arc, how the hell could you not keep up with this, when it’s literally in the same saga? Oh yeah, and let’s not forget that the backlash towards this movie caused some of the writers to just not connect story beats anymore and caused a lot of the lore bits in the Puzzlevision saga to be unanswered, underdeveloped, and just generally cutoff. Plus, this influence of people who aren’t consistent with their arguments spread to most modern critics in the SMG4 space (Redditors), who say stupid stuff like, oh I don’t know, “Mr Puzzles should have died in the Puzzlevision movie and having him actually develop is bad”.
But yeah, this movie is still great, and I’m still gonna talk about it, but I just wanted to mention that aspect

So since I’m sick and have nothing better to do, I decided to rewatch the Genesis and Revelations arcs from SMG4, and there is one thing that still confuses me.
So, with episode “Mario Babies”, I have to ask, how canon is this episode?
Obviously, the episode is canon as it’s basically the Segway on to SMG4’s Origins, but what I mean is, are the other characters backstories fully canon? Now, the one that is definitely confirmed is Meggy’s, if it wasn’t canon, then Western Spaghetti would not exist. Melony’s, Bob’s, and Shroomy’s seem like they could happen, putting aside the whole “Melony fought in the Vietnam war despite being younger” thing. The ones that I’m kinda questioning are Mario’s, Bowser’s, and Luigi’s. Mainly, I’m gonna ask, was Mario always dumb, or was it the guardian pod that made him dumb? I know that it’s Baby Mario, but even for a baby, it’s still very clearly SMG4 Mario’s personality, which doesn’t match with the fact that Mario became stupid because of SMG4’s guardian pod, same with Luigi, who is shown to also be affected by the pod, while, again, still acting as his SMG4 self as a baby. Plus it makes the question of how old Mario is even more confusing. Now, you could say that it’s just Mario and Luigi recounting their backstories wrong, however, specifically with Mario’s, Bowser also recounts the same story as Mario as he was part of that flashback as well.
So, what exactly does this mean? I’m gonna ask y’all, how would you make all of this make sense, cause me personally, I’m still not sure
