Heatstroke (熱中症, necchūshō) is a serious concern in Japan's hot and humid summers. It occurs when your body can't regulate its temperature, leading to overheating. If untreated, it can be fatal.
The official says that 1,477 people died in 2022, 1,651 people in 2023 and 2,033 in 2024.
Causes: High temperatures, High humidity, Strong sunlight Lack of wind, Dehydration, Overexertion Alcohol consumption Lack of sleep
Symptoms: Mild: Dizziness, lightheadedness, muscle cramps, excessive sweating Moderate: Headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, weakness Severe: High body temperature, loss of consciousness, unresponsiveness, seizures, inability to walk straight
Prevention: Stay indoors in air-conditioned environments when possible. Avoid direct sunlight. Use a parasol or hat when outdoors. Drink plenty of water and sports drinks to replenish fluids and electrolytes. Avoid caffeinated and sugary drinks. Wear loose-fitting, breathable, light-colored clothing. Use portable fans, cooling sprays, neck coolers, and cooling wipes. Consume salt candies or electrolyte supplements, especially if sweating a lot. Avoid physical activity during the hottest part of the day.
Remedies/First Aid: Move to a cool place: Shade or an air-conditioned room. Cool the body: Remove excess clothing. Apply cool water or ice packs to the neck, armpits, and groin. Fan the person. Hydrate: If conscious, give them a cold beverage with electrolytes (sports drinks or oral rehydration solutions like OS-1). Seek medical attention: Call for an ambulance (119 in Japan) if the person is unconscious, unable to drink, or has severe symptoms.
