Some birds don't just brighten the forests. The Silver-eared Mesia is one of the most vibrant birds of the Eastern Himalayas. It's every sighting feels like discovering a tiny living jewel among the leaves.

Watching these energetic little birds hop through the foliage, pausing just long enough for a photograph, was a delightful experience. We had encounter with flock of Silver-eared Mesia not just once but twice on our 3 days birding trip to Doorkhola in May.

International Tiger Day 🐅💛- Through the Eyes of Aakanksha !

The first time she saw a tiger, she was thrilled. Watching it walk through the forest so confidently made her realize why it's so elegant an animal. It's not just powerful -it's graceful, calm, and incredibly beautiful.

But she also learned that tigers need our help. Their forests are disappearing, and without safe homes, their future is uncertain.

Protecting tigers means protecting forests, rivers, birds, and countless other animals that share their world.

And while some of the people can directly work in conservation, other can help by promoting the love of tiger through photography so that more people opt for responsible Eco tourism which will help the forest department and local people preserve their habitat and species.

She dreams of growing up in a world where future generations can still experience the thrill of seeing a wild tiger roaming free.

When Blue Meets Orange in the Himalayan forest !

The Rufous-bellied Niltava - one of the Eastern Himalayas' most beautiful forest flycatchers.
The male is impossible to miss, glowing in brilliant shades of deep blue with a rich rufous-orange belly to attract females. In contrast, the female wears a simple drab brown plumage, made by nature to raise the young ones without getting noticed. We noticed this bird on our trails in Doorkhola while searching for the Silver-eared Mesia.

A very quick scan at Rajarhat yesterday morning and really happy to see all these birds still deciding to make left over green patches of Rajarhat their home. Hopefully in a few days the Red munias will join the area too !

The Blue-winged Laughingthrush! 💙

It was back in 2022 at Okhrey when I first caught a fleeting glimpse of this beautiful bird. From that moment, it was high on my wish list to photograph, but despite several attempts, luck was never on my side.

Then came Doorkhola.

During one of our morning trails, we came across a lively flock of Blue-winged Laughingthrushes and Pramod ji showed me the flock from quite a distance. I approached them quietly. Instead of disappearing into the undergrowth as they often do, they stayed around long enough to let me truly enjoy the moment and capture them through my lens.

Some birds are worth the wait, and this one certainly was.

A Splash of Sunshine in the Himalayas ✨

Over my three unforgettable days in Doorkhola, I was fortunate to observe two to three male and one female Black-throated Sunbird foraging, feeding on nectar, and calling around the backyard of Pramod Ji's house.

One of the most fascinating moments was watching the males engage in territorial disputes. From what I observed, they seemed to occupy nearby territories. Whenever the resident male was away, another male would quickly slip in to feed on the flowers and occasionally attempt to approach the female. But the rightful owner never stayed away for long, he would soon return, chase away the intruder with remarkable aggression, and reclaim his flowering patch. Pramod ji said during peak spring season there are more sunbirds around the area.

The dazzling males, with their iridescent colors, naturally stole the spotlight. Yet the female, dressed in her subtle olive-yellow plumage, possessed a quiet elegance of her own.

Some moments in birding aren't about rare sightings- they're about quietly appreciating nature's everyday masterpieces.

I have never been able to ignore this common yet breathtaking bird of the Himalayas. No matter how many times I see one, its brilliant turquoise-blue plumage always catches my eye and makes me pause.
The Verditer Flycatcher is one of those birds that effortlessly brightens the forest with its vivid colors, almost like a patch of the clear Himalayan sky has come alive.

Series - A Tree Full of Tiny Treasures! 🌿🐦

We counted 5–6 Chestnut-bellied Nuthatch actively foraging on a single tree, moving effortlessly up, down, and around the trunk of the tree. Here are some frames clicked at the spot at Doorkhola.

The Chestnut-bellied Nuthatch is a small yet energetic bird, instantly recognizable by its rich chestnut underparts, bluish-grey upperparts, and its remarkable ability to climb headfirst down tree trunks. Unlike woodpeckers, they don't rely on drilling; instead, they skillfully inspect bark cracks in search of hidden insects and spiders.
Moments like these remind us that nature's greatest spectacles aren't always the largest, they're often found in the smallest birds, going about their daily lives high among the trees.
