it’s my 41st birthday today! 🥳 a few days ago, i FINALLY bit the bullet on vlogging again and i just uploaded my 3rd episode in a row. it’s been so much fun to experiment with video again and i’m hoping to continue this daily for as long as i can.

being that it’s my bday, i was feeling reflective so i scrolled through some of my old videos and found this one from september 5, 2017…. it’s crazy that 9 years later, i can echo the same sentiment that i did in this vlog. i was talking about how i had almost quit a few months before recording this but i decided not to. i had gotten into my first car accident and it just felt like the universe was telling me that this was the end. but i decided to push through. i never gave up. AND THAT WAS NOTHING COMPARED TO WHAT THE NEXT 9 YEARS WOULD BRING 😆

today, i feel exactly the same because 6 months ago, i was diagnosed with the super fun combo that is ADHD + perimenopause and feeling the most shitty i’ve ever felt in my life, physically and mentally.💩i can honestly say that i did quit, at least in the moment. i was so miserable and i needed to tell myself that i was done. and thanks to my super supportive and loving husband, i made it through and i’m here vlogging again… feeling like myself again.💜

i can honestly say that i am not where i thought i would be 9 years ago. i failed every goal i set out for myself lol. BUT also, my life is WAY better than i had ever imagined. i’m super happy, super thankful, and so excited to see where else life takes me 🤩

note to self: PLEASE KEEP VLOGGING!! JUST CREATE MORE! YOUR FUTURE SELF WILL THANK YOU FOR IT!!

i’ve created 5 video podcasts on my journey as a content creator, all of which are also streamed on YouTube.

💯From 1 to 100 - an interview series that explored different ways to monetize as a content creator

👾Charting the Course, The Just Play Podcast, and The Lobby - three recently launched video podcasts by the ‪@HeatherJustPlay‬ community with another on the way.

i LOVE video podcasts. this format works the best in helping me connect with my community and share what’s important to me. and I’M SUPER HONORED to be sharing the stage with ‪@CatMulvihill‬ and ‪@DianaGladney‬ 🤩 i’ve known both of them for years and i can truly say that all of us have DONE THE THING. we put in the reps, learned what works and what doesn’t in this space, and we’re passionate about helping others share their stories!

EXCITING NEWS! 🤩 i’m so proud and thrilled to share that ‪@tombuck‬ has been shortlisted as a finalist for the ‪@rodemic‬ Creator of the Year awards!! creators have been judged based on the following criteria: audio quality, visual quality, personality and originality. and there’s also a People’s Choice Award where YOU can vote for a creator in each category. tom is in Gear & Tech Reviews!

tom and i happened to meet right before he started his youtube journey. check out this email he sent me on August 20, 2017:

“Don't know even where to begin on this one, but I feel like it's important for me to actually push myself towards building my own YouTube channel. You gave me the kick in the pants I needed, and on top of that, if my 11 year old self knew that I could make movies and share them with LITERALLY THE ENTIRE WORLD FOR FREE, but I wasn't doing it, he'd be pretty disappointed and confused.

Money/subscribers/views aren't the goal. Obviously there's a certain sweet spot I'd like to hit where it doesn't feel totally pointless, but beyond that, I'm mostly tired of being a creator who doesn't create, and to tie it into work, it will help me better understand the thing I teach.

In your opinion, why would anyone want to watch? What would be an effective way to frame my story/perspective/ideas/whateveryouwanttocallit? I definitely do want to keep things genuine and authentic.”

tom, it brings a tear to my eye to know that both your 11 year old self and your 2017 self would be so proud of where you are now. 🥹 you did it. you ARE doing it.👏🏼 you gave yourself the chance. you pushed through. you never gave up. every day, you inspire me with how dedicated and creative you are. you really do light up when you are teaching, empowering, and sharing your excitement. it’s been the greatest joy to be a part of your journey. 💜

tom is gear focused but ever since he was a high school teacher, it’s always been about helping people use these tools to discover their voice, share their passion, and connect with others. since he started his channel, he’s made over 500 videos! to be a finalist is a huge milestone and if you’d like to support tom, here’s the link! geni.us/tomrode

an update 🙂 For the past 6 years, most of the content I’ve created has been about content creation and the creator economy. But this year, I’ve been feeling… disconnected? Tired? I feel like so much of the conversation has been about racing to be the biggest and the best, feeding algorithms, optimizing processes for maximum exposure, and the never-ending chase towards incomprehensibly large numbers.

Content creation started to feel exhausting and before I knew it, I found myself avoiding it all.

At first, I thought it was burnout because that’s the default reason for every creator struggle it seems. But it’s wasn’t.

A few months ago, my brother finally convinced me to play Final Fantasy XIV. I’ve avoided it for years because even though I’m a lifelong gamer, I didn’t want to play an MMO.

But I decided to give it a shot and not even exaggerating, it’s been life-changing.

This freakin’ game has reinvigorated the fire in me, to the point where I FINALLY decided to bring my long-time dream for a YouTube gaming channel to life: HeatherJustPlay.

And I can’t stop thinking about making more videos. That ITCH is back. The spark of creativity where ideas wake me up in the middle of the night, where I’m excited to see what I can come up with.

Working on ‪@HeatherJustPlay‬ has reminded me about the MAGIC of YouTube, the thing that brought me and Tom together, the reason I became a YouTube coach in the first place.

This potential of being able to share your enthusiasm with other people who get it. THIS is what it’s about. It’s such a special thing that this platform allows us to connect with people we would never otherwise meet (FOR FREE) and in the past month, I’ve felt like I’ve made so many new friends who love video games as much as I do.

So I’m hanging up the HeatherJustCreate/YouTube coach hat for a while and going all in on HeatherJustPlay. It makes me happy. It’s creatively challenging. It’s fun.

And it feels right. It feels like everything was leading up to this and I’m so grateful. I can’t wait to see what happens next! :)
