In her namesake city of Ballarat, Victoria, HMAS Ballarat conducted a Freedom of Entry Parade, a mark of respect and the highest accolade a town can award a military unit.
Freedom of Entry exercises are important in strengthening bonds between Defence and the Australian community. They also provide an opportunity to build familiarity, trust, and confidence with local communities.
The tradition of Freedom of Entry began when trusted military units were officially welcomed into walled towns, allowing them ‘freedom of entry’ to replenish their food and arms.
