Les does a PhD

If you're a PhD student, have you been asked (or chosen) to teach?

Here's the problem: nobody teaches us how to teach.

It's nothing like a presentation or a conference talk: you can't rehearse every word. You're just to 'figure it out' (on top of your analyses, data collection, assignments, article writing, etc).

My own philosophy of teaching, developed after ~100 hours in the classroom, is very simple: Prepare less content, but rather design more . Positioning hack: think of yourself as a mentor, not an expert.

In the new video (trying out new formats lately!), I share what's worked for me: building a course from scratch, dealing with imposter syndrome, running workshops instead of lectures, and designing activities that make students more independent.

If you're a PhD student, a TA, or about to teach your first class, I hope this makes the journey a little easier, and helps you learn from the mistakes I made.

Enjoy the video and see you again very soon (don't forget to follow along)!

Les does a PhD

What do you need to know before starting a PhD? πŸŽ“

I am finishing my PhD this autumn. Looking back on my journey, there are (at least!) 5 things I wish I had known from the start:

1. Progress is much slower than you expect
2. Your supervisor matters enormously
3. Confusion is a normal part of the process
4. Your motivation will change over time
5. Comparing yourself to others can be exhausting

I talk about all these lessons in the new video. If you’re starting a PhD or already on the journey, I hope it helps you feel a little better. I got you 🀍
