Before Pablo Escobar, before the Medellín Cartel dominated headlines, there was Roberto Suarez — the Bolivian cocaine baron who inspired Sosa, the shadowy kingpin from Scarface. This is the story of how one DEA undercover agent nearly took him down, and how a fugitive Nazi war criminal ended up running security for the biggest cocaine operation on Earth.

In the late 1970s, Bolivia — not Colombia — was the true source of the coca paste (pasta básica) feeding the American cocaine trade. Colombian traffickers converted the raw product, but the fields, the labor, and the supply chain ran through the Suarez family, one of Bolivia's oldest and most powerful dynasties, with roots tracing back to a 19th-century rubber war and deep ties to the Bolivian military elite.

DEA agent Michael Levine went undercover posing as a Mafia buyer to infiltrate Suarez's operation, working an informant's tip that promised "the biggest case DEA ever heard of." What followed was a 1980 undercover sting that pulled 850 lbs of coca paste out of the Bolivian jungle — a case that should have ended Suarez's empire.

Instead, it collapsed under the weight of political interference, dropped charges, and a government coup. That coup — known as the Cocaine Coup — installed a military junta backed by Suarez's drug money, and it was carried out with the help of Klaus Barbie, the "Butcher of Lyon," a former Gestapo chief responsible for the torture and deaths of thousands during WWII, who had escaped to South America after the war (likely via the Western intelligence "ratlines") and spent decades advising right-wing regimes across the continent.

Barbie's paramilitary death squads — the Fiancés of Death — helped topple Bolivia's government, purge labor organizers, and clear the way for Suarez's cocaine empire to operate with state protection. This video traces that entire arc: the DEA sting, the informant known only as "Lucy," the Miami bank drop, the dropped indictments, the 1980 coup, and Barbie's eventual capture and trial in France.
