If I Had to Learn SQL Again, This Is Exactly the Roadmap I'd Follow.

When I first started learning SQL, I made the mistake many beginners make.

I watched too many tutorials.
Saved hundreds of resources.
Learned random topics without a clear path.

It felt like I was learning...
But I wasn't really progressing.

If I had the chance to start over today, I'd keep it simple.

Here's the roadmap I'd follow:

1. Learn SQL Basics

Understand databases, tables, rows, and columns
Learn SQL syntax
Create and query your first database

2. Master SELECT Statements

SELECT
DISTINCT
Aliases
LIMIT/TOP

3. Filter Data

WHERE
AND / OR
IN
BETWEEN
LIKE
NULL values

4. Sort Results

ORDER BY
ASC & DESC

5. Learn JOINs (The Game Changer)

INNER JOIN
LEFT JOIN
RIGHT JOIN
FULL JOIN
SELF JOIN

6. Aggregate Data

COUNT
SUM
AVG
MIN
MAX

7. GROUP BY & HAVING
This is where SQL starts answering business questions.

8. Write Subqueries
Learn to solve more complex problems using nested queries.

9. Master Window Functions

ROW_NUMBER()
RANK()
DENSE_RANK()
LEAD()
LAG()
PARTITION BY

This separates intermediate SQL users from advanced ones.

10. Learn Performance Optimization

Indexes
Query execution plans
Query optimization
Best practices

11. Advanced SQL

Common Table Expressions (CTEs)
Views
Stored Procedures
Triggers
Real-world projects

But here's the truth...

You don't become good at SQL by finishing a course.

You become good by writing SQL every single day.

Build projects.
Solve business problems.
Practice interview questions.
Break queries.
Fix them.
Repeat.

That's how confidence is built.

If I were starting today, I wouldn't rush.

I'd master one topic before moving to the next.

Consistency beats speed. Every single time.

I've also created a complete SQL Learning Roadmap to help beginners follow a structured path instead of feeling overwhelmed.

What's the hardest SQL concept you've learned so far?
