Wine With Jimmy

I’ve recently posted two videos looking at orange wine — one introducing the topic for WSET Diploma D6 students, and a short clip from Georgia with Daria Kholodilina, exploring amber wine, qvevri and why “orange wine” can be such a confusing term.

Orange wine is one of those subjects where the language really matters: orange, amber, skin-contact white, macerated white, qvevri wine… they are often used interchangeably, but they don’t always mean exactly the same thing.

In the full Wine with Jimmy D6 Orange Wine module, I go into this in much more detail, with producer interviews, historical context, winemaking explanations and guidance designed specifically for Diploma students working on their D6 research assignment.

You can watch the full module here:

Happy International Chardonnay Day!

To mark the occasion, I’m sharing my video on Chablis and Chardonnay, created especially for WSET Level 3 students.

Chardonnay is one of the world’s most important white grape varieties, but its style can change dramatically depending on climate, site, soil and winemaking. In this video, I focus on Chablis, the cool northern Burgundy region where Chardonnay produces some of its most distinctive expressions: dry, high-acid, mineral, often briny wines shaped by limestone soils and a cool continental climate.

We look at where Chablis is, why spring frost and hail matter so much, the importance of Kimmeridgian marl, the hierarchy from Chablis to Premier Cru and Grand Cru, and how winemaking choices such as malolactic fermentation, lees ageing and oak can influence the final style.

The video also includes a Google Earth look at the Chablis area and a worked WSET Level 3-style written question to help you prepare for the exam.

A useful one for anyone studying Chardonnay, Chablis, Burgundy or WSET Level 3.

I’m really looking forward to hosting this very special South African wine masterclass at West London Wine School.

On Friday 22 May, we’ll be welcoming Kanonkop Estate for a rare tasting focused on Pinotage through the decades, alongside benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon from one of South Africa’s most important estates.

Kanonkop is often described as South Africa’s “First Growth”, and for good reason. Its wines have helped define what world-class Pinotage can be: structured, age-worthy, expressive and deeply rooted in Stellenbosch.

What makes the evening even more special is that I’ll be joined by Francois van Zyl, joining us directly from the estate, to share first-hand insight into the vineyards, the cellar and the thinking behind the wines.

We’ll be tasting 8 wines, including:

Kadette Pinotage welcome taster
Kanonkop Estate Pinotage 1999
Kanonkop Estate Pinotage 2003
Kanonkop Estate Pinotage 2015
Kanonkop Estate Pinotage 2023
Kanonkop Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
Kanonkop Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

Happy International Pinot Grigio Day!

To celebrate, I’m sharing my video on Pinot Gris / Pinot Grigio — a grape variety that is far more interesting than its everyday reputation sometimes suggests.

In the video, I look at the story behind this famous colour mutation of Pinot Noir, why the grape is known as Pinot Gris in France and Pinot Grigio in Italy, and how its style can change dramatically depending on where it is grown and how it is made.

We explore the fresh, crisp, easy-drinking Pinot Grigio styles of northern Italy, as well as the richer, rounder and more complex Pinot Gris styles found in places such as Alsace and Germany. I also look at the grape in the vineyard, its flavours, acidity, ripeness, winemaking choices and where it is grown around the world.

A great one to watch if you want to go beyond “just a glass of Pinot Grigio” and understand why this grape has become such a global success.

Cheers!
