The Artemis II astronauts are scheduled to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere tonight. Traveling at an altitude of approximately 400,000 feet and at speeds exceeding 30 times the speed of sound, the spacecraft will undergo an intense, fiery descent.

This phase, known as splashdown, will conclude with the capsule landing off the coast of San Diego. The success of the mission will largely be determined during this critical stage, widely regarded as the most challenging part of the journey. During re-entry, the crew has limited control over the Orion capsule, relying instead on precise engineering and the deployment of three parachutes to ensure a safe landing.

NASA’s recovery team remains on standby, prepared to retrieve the astronauts upon their return.

In this new image from the Artemis II crew, we see the divide between night and day, known as the terminator, cutting across Earth. Whether awake or fast asleep, we're all here on this planet together.

In the second image, also taken from the Orion capsule, we can see ourselves represented by the electric lights of human activity. In the lower right, sunlight illuminates the limb of the planet.

The Artemis II crew's schedule is designed around the requirements of the mission. While many in the U.S. were preparing for bed on April 2, the crew had just completed trans lunar injection, putting them officially on course for the Moon.
