Happy, April! It is the month of Easter!

When designing this image for April, I was surprised to learn about the connection between dogwood trees and Jesus. While there is no biblical reference to this connection, the dogwood tree, with its delicate blossoms and distinctive cross-shaped petals, has become associated with the story of Jesus. A beautiful legend has been passed down through generations, intertwining the tree’s symbolism with Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection.

According to the legend, the dogwood tree once grew tall and strong, with wood sturdy enough to be used for building, including the cross on which Jesus was crucified. The legend says after the crucifixion, God decreed that the dogwood would never again grow large enough to be used for such a purpose. From that moment on, the tree became smaller, its branches twisted and delicate, unable to support the weight of a cross.

The legend also speaks to the symbolism found in the dogwood blossom itself. The flower has four petals, forming a cross-like shape, with a rusty red indentation at the tip of each petal, reminiscent of the nail wounds of Christ. At the center of the bloom is a cluster that some say represents the crown of thorns. These details are believed to serve as a reminder of Jesus’ sacrifice and love for humanity.

Each spring, as the dogwood blooms around Easter, it serves as a beautiful reminder of Christ’s ultimate sacrifice for us and the hope that His resurrection brings.

Dolly Parton has a song called “Love is Like a Butterfly,” and the lyrical line, “as soft and gentle as a sigh ,” always makes me think about Mother Mary. Whenever I have felt Mother Mary’s presence in prayer that is how her love felt to me; soft and gentle. She arrives with an open heart and an open embrace because she wants all of her heavenly children to know how much they are loved.

“Love is like a butterfly
As soft and gentle as a sigh
The multicolored moods of love are like its satin wings
Love makes your heart feel strange inside
It flutters like soft wings in flight
Love is like a butterfly, a rare and gentle thing”

A beautiful, sunny March day with two of my passions - journaling and the rosary.

I have been reflecting a lot the past few weeks about how I want to experience the season of Lent this year.

In doing so I couldn’t help but think how I’ve spent past years and the different ways I’ve approached it: giving up sweets, social media, reading the Bible, praying the rosary, etc.

There were also a lot of years, especially through heavier times I didn’t have the mental or physical capacity to do anything. (Maybe you are in one of those times now, and if you are I am praying for you, friend.)

Through this reflection I realized, probably not intentionally, but just because that is the nature of social media, I feel even how we choose to spend our time during Lent can lead to feelings of comparison. It can be another way for us to shame ourselves for not living up to an imaginary standard. Standards we made up ourselves and hung upon our own shoulders.

This is a gentle reminder that God did not set any standards for us. There is no competition for His love. We are wholly and completely loved. Always.

However way you have chosen to spend time with your Creator this season is the “best” way. Whatever way reflects your individual and divine relationship will always be in alignment to you. It is a sacred time because you are sacred to God.
