As I close down the curtains for another birthday, another year around the sun. I thank God for blessing me with my husband , my kids, my family - just my life in general.

I thank Him for allowing me to touch the lives of students and impacting families alike through Sharpe Sessions Math Tutoring (www.sharpesessions.com/) and at my institution. I do not take it for granted. He has been truly good to me. As I look ahead, I know, the best is yet to come.

She leaned back in her seat, let out a heavy sigh, and said what so many parents feel but rarely admit out loud:

“I just don’t get it. I can’t help my child with math anymore.”

I was standing at the front of the room at the Fulton County Parent Conference—invited as a subject matter expert in math. But what I saw that day had little to do with equations and everything to do with emotion.

Around the room, I noticed the same expression over and over again:

That “me too, but I don’t know what to say” look.
Frustration.
Guilt.
Even shame.

And let’s be honest—math today does look different.
The traditional way many of us were taught is being replaced with new methods that are often faster and more flexible—but only if you understand how to use them.

So I didn’t tell them to become math experts.

Instead, I told them the truth.

The best way to support your child in math?
Start with comfort, not correction.
Point out numbers in the world around you—at the grocery store, in a recipe, in a game.
Show them that math isn’t just something that lives in a textbook. It lives in life.
And yes, sometimes it is worth bringing in a guide who can bridge the gap and explain it in a way that finally clicks.

By the end of the session, the same parents who looked confused were nodding, smiling—even asking questions.
We didn’t just talk about math.
We created aha moments.

I was a straight-A student… but I still missed out on scholarships.

I migrated to the U.S. in 10th grade, full of ambition and determination.
I crushed my GPA, teachers loved me, and I was known as the “math whiz.”
But when it came to the SAT?

I bombed it.

No one told me the SAT wasn’t just about being smart.
No one taught me the rules of the game.
So, while I had the brains… I didn’t have the strategy.

I watched students with lower GPAs and fewer extracurriculars walk away with full-ride scholarships—while I racked up student loans.

That debt followed me after graduation.
