My name is Brett and I'm a special education consultant with a passion for literacy and the Science of Reading for students with disabilities. I have worked in special education for over two decades in a variety of roles including as a teacher (virtual, self-contained, resource room, and co-teaching placements), special education administrator, and an educational attorney.
I want to use this platform to share the things I have learned along the way and learn from you as well!
Thank you for your support!

Are you ready to dive into Phonological Awareness this week? I gave two assessments (both are available online for FREE) this week to my kids and will post them so you can see an example. It was eye opening to be able to identify some specific areas they were weak in. If you aren’t sure what Phonological Awareness is, check out my introductory video here: What is Phonological Awareness (Phonemic Awareness)?

One of the toughest things about teaching, especially in special education, is all of the paperwork and data that has to be kept. It can be discouraging to see so much progress in the classroom that doesnt translate neatly to our google sheets or data points. I use a google form throughout the day to note the little things I see and try to email or share them with parents AND STUDENTS frequently. Sometimes I find that I am too focused on the data and miss out on the big picture. What about you? How do you make sure you are sharing all of that progress with parents that might not fit on the Progress Monitoring sheets we keep and send?
