War Maps

Pardon the delay in updates — there just aren’t enough hours in the day to put into YouTube.

I wanted to share an overview of the channel’s finances and what running War Maps actually looks like - now that we've reached 80,000 subscribers (thank you!) and over 35M total views.

Starting in December, a discount I have on some of the apps I use will expire, and the total monthly cost of them will rise to about $125/month. Last month, the channel earned $365 in revenue.

So while I truly appreciate all the interest, feature and map requests, War Maps still has to remain as a side project. I really love working on it and will keep doing so, but realistically, it’s unlikely the channel will attract any sponsors or advertisers — and there’s always that risk of demonetization or just outright getting banned due to the topic.

Bottom line, if you’d like to support War Maps directly, you can do so by joining the channel’s YouTube Membership. There are currently 3 members supporting the channel with $3 per month. If enough of you are willing and able to join, and I'm able to foresee actually being able to pay some bills with YouTube, I’ll dedicate more time to War Maps and scale back other projects.

We'll list all channel members at the end of each video ahead, which is an incredible value for the money - to commemorate the few that help keep War Maps going.

Which map types do you prefer? And I'll need to clarify this, because I make 2 types of maps.

First type is where we zoom in closer to any particular settlement and its immidiate surrounding - and every day is animated at multiple hourly points, giving us a more detailed movement / animation of the frontlines. This essentially becomes 'every hour' type of a map. Upside is a more dynamic view of the frontline. Downside is that I'm making implied movements based on reported attack directions (if I'm lucky enough to have a source to show it) and terrain. So while it's interesting to see, those are my own inferred / implied movements based on day to day frontline snapshots / attack directions / terrain. Accuracy is hence a concern.

Second type is where we zoom further out, normally encompassing multiple key settlements, and there are no detailed hourly movements, but rather every day is animated as a single point. It's then as accurate as the map source I'm using is.

I should also mention that hour by hour takes an (best described as) 'incredible' amount of time to do. I'd mark that as a downside, personally.

Which nation joined WW2 out of a principle to save another country?

To the channel's Ukrainian and Russian viewers, how does listening to this song makes you feel: https://www . youtube . com / watch?v=hcBI9ghNqDk (patch it into the URL - if I post an URL, YT wont share it with anyone). You'll be required to swap the theme of the song with Ukraine and Russia, and Kyiv / Moscow.

The song has more sentimental meaning to me, and attachment to it, but I am still curious - how does the theme and the lyrics makes you feel, given your own 'theme'?

You might not be 'brothers' for a few generations, if you were at all (similar to Croatia and Serbia)?

Turn on captions.

Channel update! Patreon cancelled - we weren't cancelled, we cancelled it. We're going to have a bit more honest relations with our viewers ahead. Bottomline, I am busy with side projects and I will do my best to update the channel as much as I can, but that will mean about 1 video every 1-2-3 weeks.

To be honest, begging people for money is the worst side of YouTube. I understand the channels that do it, as YT earnings are not at the level where one could consider living from it. I've tried involving Patreon into the scheme of things, it did not work, now we will be fairly practical / pragmatic with YouTube.

Really appreciate your guys and ladies for past mental support and motivation to keep going. And we shall, but at a realistic video per week rate, as bills have to be paid.

Stay tuned for more! But no need to tune in too much! I do look forward to having time to update the frontlines.

This is NOT a call to support the channel with money, there is no way to 'send money' any longer.

As mentioned earlier, I’ll be making exclusive videos for Patreon members as a way to say thanks for their support. For the first one, the choice was theirs — and they picked Kupyansk frontline updates.

The video is now up and covers the frontline from January 1st to September 6th 2025. I’ve made it available to both free and paid members so everyone can check it out.

This channel is only possible because I put too much time into financially detrimental projects. The application costs of War Maps eats about 70% of YouTube revenue currently. I will do this regardless because I enjoy making maps, and because community response has been nothing but motivating. So I appreciate you guys in any case. But I would like to see if something more can come out of this - and that will not be possible with YouTube revenue.
