Did you know that sounding monotone can actually cost you points on the IELTS speaking test? But not only on exams, sounding monotone can also change how confident or interested you sound when you’re speaking in everyday conversations.

Today, I’m sharing a conversation with the wonderful Aubrey, from All Ears English, where we talk about what being monotone can really cost you (and how to overcome it.)

I hope you enjoy it!

Let me ask you something.

How many times have you said no to an opportunity, not because you didn’t want it, but because you didn’t feel confident enough to say yes?

I’ve seen it so many times (and if we’re being honest, most of us have been there):
“I’m not good enough yet.”
“I’ll probably mess it up.”
“I’m not ready.”

But here’s the thing.

A lot of the time, it’s not your grammar that’s holding you back.

It’s the feeling you get right before you speak.

That moment when your heart speeds up.
When you start overthinking every word.
When you choose silence because it feels safer.

And that’s why improving your English is not only about vocabulary, pronunciation, or grammar.

It’s also about the inner work:
confidence, mindset, and how you show up when it matters.

Because when you start saying yes to speaking up, applying, joining the conversation, sharing your ideas, you build real-life experience.

And that experience is what makes you better.

If you want more of that energy in the New Year, I’m inviting you to join My English Mindset, bit.ly/3KZCBPS, a 30-day audio course designed to help you shift how you think, feel, and act in English, so you stop second-guessing yourself and start showing up with confidence.

For a limited time, it’s 50% off: $24.50 (instead of $49).

You’ve already done a lot to improve your English.

Now let’s make it feel easier to use it 💪

I made a list of garbage.

Not actual garbage. Just the things I’m ready to throw out and leave behind in 2025.

Things I don’t want to carry with me into 2026.

Things that make me feel off.

That hold me back from growing.

That quietly keep me unhappy.

Here’s a partial list:

🗑️ Needing control

🗑️ Stress and worry

🗑️ Being argumentative

🗑️ Distrusting the idea that things will always work out in the best possible way

🗑️ Being on my phone (yes, we’re in a complicated relationship)

And there’s more, don’t worry 😅

But I wanted to share a little taste… and invite you to create your own “garbage list” too.

What are you letting go of in 2025?

And if you’re not sure where to start, I put together a list of things I truly believe you should leave behind in 2025 if you want 2026 to be your most fulfilling, productive, and fluent (!!) year.

You can watch it here: bit.ly/3Nf1DLp

Every day is a great day to leave the stuff behind and start fresh, but the New Year feels like a collective opportunity for all of us to do it together.

So let’s. 😉

How do you feel about telling stories in English?
This week I have a new episode for you, especially if you have ever thought:
“I’m not a storyteller.”
“I talk too much and lose people.”
“I’m a better storyteller in my first language.”
I had a conversation this week with Bree. Bree has a podcast called “Into the Story” where she talks about what storytelling really is in a second language, and how it can be much simpler than we usually think. You don’t need fancy words or perfect grammar. You can even stay in the present tense (yay!) and still tell a clear, powerful story.

If you want to bring more stories into your meetings, presentations, content, or everyday conversations in English, I think you will really enjoy this one. ♥️
