Happy World Lindy Hop Day! And happy birthday to the late great Frankie Manning!
Here are a few ideas on how you can take a few minutes out of your day to celebrate...
Frankie Manning Foundation
Spend some time on the Frankie Manning Foundation website. Read about Frankie, check out some of their past projects. And, if you can, donate! They have some great programs as part of their mission to keep Frankie’s legacy alive, and some great history resources you can use to learn more about the history of this dance.

Integrated Rhythm
Or, why not listen to some stories about some of Frankie’s amazing partners? Check out the podcast Integrated Rhythm from Bobby White and Chisomo Selemani; in the new episode Bobby tells some great stories about these amazing women.
We found these link for youtube, but you can find Integrated Rhythm on lots of other podcast providers too.

Dance!
Maybe the best thing you can do today to honor the legacy of Frankie, and all the other dancers who created the lindy hop, is … just … dance! Dance a little shim sham, swing out in your kitchen, or just enjoy a good old shimmy while brushing your teeth tonight. Do it with a smile and enjoy your World Lindy Hop Day :)

Radio Up On The Roof
Ninety years ago, Hortense Unger took the radio up to the roof to escape the heat. She’s shown here consulting the latest issue of Radio World for the most refreshing program. This picture appeared in that magazine’s June 27, 1925 issue.

Each Monday & Thursday, 21:00 CET
we’ll DJ some great jazz songs and share fun facts about the artists or songs and you can do whatever suits you; we’ve had people playing card games, gardening, dancing or just having a cup of coffee with us, or you can sit on the roof and watch the stars or enjoy the sun, depends on you timezone ;-).

We miss you and we hope you are doing well. Fingers crossed that the situation continues to improve and we can all meet up and dance with each other again :)
In the meanwhile, this down-time we are all having is a great opportunity to inform ourselves more about the culture and history of this amazing dance we all love so much. One great way to do that is to join some of the great online events that are happening lately. This week there are three (!) that we think look pretty cool, and we wanted to quickly share them with you. Keep in mind these are not our events, so we probably can’t answer many questions about them, but they look really interesting…
Thursday 20:00 CET
The Best of the History of Black Dance in America
www.eventbrite.com/e/the-best...
This will be an online retrospective of 10 years of performances - education and entertainment about the Black roots of American social dance. The event will be hosted by the fantastic Chester Whitmore, and there will be a Q&A at the end. (Tickets are about 15€.)
Saturday 18:00 CET
Have you met…? Norma’s Jazz Dancers
www.collectivevoicesforchange...
This will be a conversation with three dancers we maybe haven’t heard of before but definitely should get to know: Mickey Davidson, Amaniyea Payne, and Darlene Askew Gist - they are key figures bridging the gap between the original jazz age and our modern scene, and we can probably learn a lot by sitting at their feet for a little while ;) (Tickets: you can choose your price, 5€ - 25€.)
** afterwards, why not come over to the SwingStep-Online Session for the DJ Battle!
Saturday 20:30 CET
DJ Battle of the Bands
Sarah Spoon representing Duke Ellington versus Katie Cobalt representing Ella Fitzgerald!
Get the Zoom Link by registration at swingstep.tv/
Sunday 19:30 CET
Everything Remains Raw
www.moncelldurden.com/shop/err
Moncell Durden is a great hip hop dancer and dance historian; this event is a screening of his documentary film about the moves and movements in African American dance - as he writes, “from the Lindy Hop to hip-hop, from cakewalk to the moonwalk”. (Tickets are about 17€.)
We hope you take the chance to join one of these events, or find other ways to learn more about the history and culture of jazz music and dance. It’s important, and it’s so enriching and inspiring.
Stay healthy and we hope to see you soon!

Hey LindyHop-Fans! As you might imagine, we also have been hit by the Corona-crisis, as both our local schools and our beloved festivals were affected. BUT what we love about being such a strong team is that we can tackle challenges head on! And what we love about being part of a Swing Community is the overwhelming support that reached us from so many sides <3! So in the last 6 weeks we've been super busy developing www.swingstep.tv/. We set out to deliver quality online swing dance classes that will be good ressources for learning swing dance also after all of this is over and we are quite proud of the result. Have a look for yourself!
