Did I Mess Up by Not Inviting My Girlfriend to My Promotion Dinner?
I recently got promoted at my company after years of hard work, and my coworkers organized a small dinner to celebrate. But I made the tough call not to invite my girlfriend.
Here’s why: In the past, whenever I’ve been recognized at work, she’s tended to steer the conversation toward her own experiences. For example, when I won an award, she spent most of the night talking about how she once turned down a big promotion for her mental health, shifting the focus away from the celebration.
This time, I wanted the night to be about this milestone and to enjoy it with my colleagues. I told her it was just a work thing. She later saw a photo online and got really upset, saying I embarrassed her and made her feel excluded.
I tried to explain my side, but now she thinks I’m being selfish.
Was I wrong for wanting one night to celebrate my achievement without worrying about someone else taking the spotlight? What would you have done in my situation?
