People don’t always see the behind-the-scenes journey it takes to share your story of hope.

Along the way, many people will ask how they can help. Some will offer advice. Some will cheer from a distance. But very few will make the decision to truly build with you.

My brother Duawne has been one of those people.

Through the years, he has always returned my calls. But more than that, he has prayed with me through some of the storms behind the story—the moments that never made it to a stage, a post, or a highlight reel.

That kind of friendship means more to me than I can put into words.

As I prepare to share My Story of Hope this Sunday, July 12, I’m deeply grateful that Duawne will be there—not simply as an extraordinary artist, but as a brother who has been present for parts of the journey that helped shape the story.

Thank you, my brother, for answering the phone, for praying, for believing, and for building.

Friday night I sat at the piano at the First Friday Solidarity Sing in Silver Spring, and I felt like I was absorbing something from the room. A collective sigh.
And then, as we sang "This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine" — I felt hope. 🕯️
We sang so many beautiful songs. I especially loved learning Oscar Peterson's "Hymn to Freedom" — a song that imagines every heart, every hand, every voice joining together... and says that's when we'll be free.
But it was while playing "We Shall Overcome" that it hit me why I cherish moments like this outside my regular duties as a minister of music:
People with pure and beautiful hearts, aligning in song — to protest what's wrong with our world, and to fight against it.
We encourage each other with our singing. Hope is confirmed. We share our stories in song. And we are reminded of a better day to come.
Deep in my heart, I do believe. 🎹
