“A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps.” -Proverbs 16:9

As homeschool planning season rolls around, I am reminded that so many of my “plans” may never come to fruition.

We may not get through every curriculum. We may change a resource . . . or two.

We may add on a field trip along the way, or find that a co-op is not as good of a fit as we had hoped.

There will be shifts and changes . . . and a whole lot of life lived in between.

So, why plan?

Why take the time to break it all down and map it all out?

Because what we plan for is more than a checklist. . .

We plan for growth and connection. We plan for intention and purpose. We plan to cultivate learning and time in God’s Word, life skills, and diligence and perseverance. We plan so that we can keep our eyes on what is most important.

As I write down the lessons and page numbers and the proposed school calendar, I am reminded that these will be the means in which we learn the greater lessons of life—not simply the goals within themselves.

Yes, we will target thinking skills, reading, writing, and math. We will explore science and history and all the other subjects . . .

But interwoven through it all, we will have surprises, disappointments, discussions, and opportunities to learn about the deeper things.

I pray that as we walk through the pages of this calendar, we can live lives that are focused and connected with what matters most. đź’—

Nurturing Connections Homeschool

Some of us run. Some of us swim. Some of us dance.

Some of us learn more quickly than others. Some of us see the world just a bit differently.

We were never meant to be put in a box or on a conveyer belt toward sameness. We were never meant to be standardized or pushed into the trap of comparison.

For we are all fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of our Creator.

May we see the gifts and strengths in every learner, every child, and inspire that God-given desire and curiosity to learn.

May we uplift and encourage and seek to see our children as He does--not as vessels to be filled but as souls to be nurtured and loved.

May we teach them and love them well. đź’—

Nurturing Connections Homeschool

Ten years ago, when I first began our homeschool journey, I was told that a typical homeschool day for a kindergartener was just about 30 minutes to an hour.

I had no idea they were being serious.

It's taken some bumps and paradigm shifts along the way, but we've found our homeschool "sweet spot."

It turns out, one hour of "formal" kindergarten was just about right.

Why?

Because it's so much easier to teach a handful of students rather than a classroom full of them. Lessons and practices don't require an entire hour per subject when it's just you and your little one, sitting side by side.

Children are also always learning and growing. It's amazing how much you can teach a child simply through reading rich literature and sharing life together.

The deepest and most profound conversations don't just happen around the dining room table. They happen all day long.

So I guess, in some ways, our days don't necessarily end, but as far as "seatwork" is concerned, this is about where we've landed over the years.

How about you?

How long is your typical homeschool day?
