Rick's Creations

Welcome to my channel! I'm Rick Hertel, an illustrator, mapmaker, worldbuilder, painter and writer. Ten years ago I started building a fantasy world called Tumiun, and this is where I will share tales of that world with you.

Rick's Creations

My next video will tell you all you need to know about the magic system of Tumiun, and how its many different peoples utilize it in diverse and wondrous ways. Which culture are you most excited to learn more of?

Hi everyone! I want to start by thanking you all so much for the ongoing love and support, I still can't believe how lucky I am to have such kind and amazing fans. I wanted to provide a detailed and very transparent update for what I'm working on and what I've got planned for the coming months, for those of you who might like to know what to expect.

First off, I've got a new video coming in two weeks, it will be a laid back video talking about how I actually go about building my world, sharing some tips and techniques I picked up in this past decade of enjoying the hobby. I've had lots of requests to do a worldbuilding tutorial so this upcoming video will sort of be my answer to that, though it's more of a love letter to the hobby than a real tutorial, just me sharing some friendly advice to anyone who might like to hear it.

After that I've got a very exciting video coming out in November! I will finally be revealing a whole lot more about the art/memory-based magic system of Tumiun. It'll be a bit of a different video to my normal Tales of Tumiun videos, featuring mostly timelapses of new artworks and me narrating on top of that. As some of you may know I've struggled a lot with wanting to constantly increase the scope and scale of my videos and I get way too perfectionistic about it all. Sometimes I need to just focus on letting the art and lore speak for itself, without crazy animations or maps being drawn. Sorry if it's not what you have come to expect from me, though I'll make sure it'll still hit the spot!

And don't worry, sometime in the winter I will begin working on the next Cartographer video, which will be about the dragons of Tumiun! In the previous video, about the Dreadcoast, I let all of you vote on which of the monsters you most wanted to learn more of, and the dragons won the vote! The Cartographer will be drawing a map of the continent of Avanima, where dragons from all over Tumiun come together to share their songs and their ideas. It'll take a while to get it done, so don't expect it to release in 2025.

I do, however, still have another video that's almost ready to film, and it will feature all of the amazing Tumiun-related questions you left under my video about the Aiuo, the "Elves" of Tumiun. Consider it a sort of Q&A, but with a fun Cartographer twist. Not sure when that'll be out though, December at the earliest.

And as many of you know I'm also working on something else, which is taking a lot longer to set up than I initially thought. That's the Kickstarter campaign for "The Cartographer's Tome of Tumiun: A Guide To The Walled World", an artbook/compendium containing all of the lore, maps and illustrations I've collected over the years, presented as a sort of a travel diary written by the Cartographer. I realized quickly that I wanted to share a bit more about my world through my videos before sharing all of the lore in this way, and I need a bit more time to figure out all of the logistics before I can launch the campaign comfortably, but the Kickstarter's definitely still coming, and hopefully this year though I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up launching early 2026.

I've also got another idea for a new series that might scratch my itch of being able to engage more with all of you lovely people, but I am not sure when I'll be able to start working on it. In short, it's a weekly worldbuilding workout video where I pose a question or writing exercise about the worlds you might be building, providing a place for answers and discussions in the comment section. And of course I'll share my own Tumiun-related answer to the question during the video as well. So they'll be short, weekly snippets of lore, but also a way for all you worldbuilders out there to build out your own universe a little bit more every week, and to have a place to share those ideas with other likeminded people. I'd love to hear what you think!

Oh and as a sidenote, I am incredibly excited to announce that many of my upcoming videos will be sponsored, which means I can afford to spend much more time on YouTube and less on my freelance job. That means more videos, yay! I'll do my best to not have them disrupt the immersion too much, and in-character videos like Cartographer videos won't have sponsorships in them at all, no worries!

And finally, yes, I'm still working on my novel(s?), though that is absolutely still a few years off. I have so many stories I want to tell and crazy plotlines planned, but right now I don't have the time to focus on both the videos and the novels, so patience is the name of the game! But good things come to those who wait, and I am working very hard trying to make good things every single day. I hope to keep you all entertained and inspired for many years to come!

Questions, comments, thoughts, and ideas are all very welcome!

Much love and many thanks,

Rick

Greetings dear friends!

Thank you all so much for the overwhelmingly kind comments on my most recent video, I still can't believe how lucky I am to have such amazing and supportive companions joining me on this adventure. And so many of you were eager to let me know which of the five monster types you wanted to learn more of first, thank you for that! Dragons are in the lead now, followed very closely by the Beasts. My YouTube members and Patreon supporters will be the ones who'll get decide which of those two will be the subject of the Cartographer's next mapmaking chapter!

Although I've got a fun bonus video coming in the meantime! While filming my previous video I shot a bit too much footage and before I bin all of those big files I figured I could compile them into a mapmaking ambience video with some rain and music in the background, perfect for worldbuilding or mapmaking to. It should be out in a couple of days, so stay tuned! After that I will focus on my next video, in which I'll finally get around to including many of the great questions you all commented under my video about the Aiuo.

I am also blown away by how many of you are already following the Kickstarter campaign for The Cartographer's Tome of Tumiun, and I really hope it will be a success! If you're not following it yet, be sure to visit the pre-launch page here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/rickscreations/10-yea…

Much love,

Hello dear friends! I've got some very exciting news concerning The Cartographer's Tome of Tumiun: The pre-launch page for the Kickstarter is officially live! Which means you can now sign up to get notified when the campaign actually launches early this summer. Follow the link and press the "Notify me on launch" button to make sure you don't miss anything: www.kickstarter.com/projects/rickscreations/10-yea…

Feel free to share the link with anyone you think might be interested in backing the Tome :)

I'd love to hear what you all think of the new covers, they're still not final but I'm very happy with the direction! My previous poll asking for feedback on the designs was perfectly tied between the leather look and the parchment look, so I've decided that I'll make both versions available in the Kickstarter. Oh and BTW, I'll have a new video up on Tuesday so stay tuned. It isn't really about Tumiun, but it's straight from the heart, and almost 30 minutes long!

Much love,

Rick

Thank you all so much for your feedback on my previous post! I'm delighted to hear that so many of you are interested in The Cartographer's Tome of Tumiun, a compendium of all of the art, maps, lore and more I've created for Tumiun over the past ten years, told from the perspective of the man who mapped it all. I have already started putting together a Kickstarter campaign, and will be releasing a video about it sometime in the coming weeks, before it actually goes live. In the meantime I'd love some feedback on these cover concepts I quickly put together. These are just temporary placeholders but I'd love to hear which vibe you prefer the most, let me know in the comments below! Thanks so much <3

Hello dear friends! I've got an exciting announcement for you all, and I'd love to get some feedback on it: I'm working on a Tumiun compendium!

Because it will still be at least a few more years before I finish my fantasy novel "Where Storms Are Born", I wanted to find another way of giving you all a heavy dose of Tumiun to put on your bookshelves in the meantime. Many of you have been asking about a possible artbook containing all of my illustrations and sketches, and I figured I could take it one step further by creating a collection of not just my art, but also all of the lore, short stories, poems, maps, concepts, songs, languages, scripts, and other worldbuilding snippets I've created over a decade of worldbuilding. It'll contain detailed lore about Tumiun's peoples, lands, histories, myths, legends, gods, creatures, and more.

Right now I'm imagining it as "The Cartographer's Tome of Tumiun — A Guide To The Walled World", compiling all of the Cartographer's stories from traveling the world of Tumiun, accompanied by his maps and my art. Most of the lore will be written from his perspective, though some snippets and short stories told from other perspectives will be mixed in. But before I spend months of my time putting this compendium together, I'd love to hear from you if this is even something you'd be interested in owning! If I were to launch a Kickstarter campaign for instance, would you back it? Don't vote 'yes', if you aren't actually interested, honesty helps out more than kindness :)

Or maybe you have a different idea of how I could turn this into something great, perhaps you'd prefer it if I make it more of a D&D setting guide, focusing more on the technical TTRPG aspect. Please let me know if you have any ideas on what you'd like to see in The Tome of Tumiun and how I could provide you with something you'd absolutely love to own!

To help inform your feedback: a paperback version will cost around $30, a hardcover around $40, a premium linen version with a dust jacket will be around $45, shipping will cost between $5 and $10.

As always I want to thank you all for your invaluable feedback and support!

I wish you all an adventurous day :)

Rick
